My fathers name is Henry Vincent Terry and he was born January 10th 1938 in Hoboken New Jersey. He knows very little about his past as he was raised by a friend of his mothers (Mother was Catherine Terry, potential date of death - early 1940's - alot in question here) I have his birth certificate, but that's really about it, so if anyone suggestions I would be grateful to here them.

Hello family, I am looking for info on my Terry ancestry.

My father is Everett Terry b.1896 Tyler TX.  Twin brother is Ernest. His first wife was Mae Horton. My mother was his second wife, Christine Martinez. My father died in Parlier, CA, About 25 miles south of Fresno.

My grandfather was Francis Marion Terry b.1844 Bibb Co Al. Married Mariah Elizabeth Todd.

My ggrandfather was John Terry b. about 1810 in S.C. Married Elizabeth Baker.

The rest is what I am searching for. I know that John and his family were living with his mother Nancy in the family home in 1830, but I don't know who his father was or when he died.

I have the names, birth dates and birthplaces of my father's children from his first marriage and also info on my grandfather's children. Would like to be able to help anyone who is researching their ancestry also.

Hope to hear from some relatives soon.

Emma Jean Terry

Mike, I have just received the complete pension file from the NARA regarding Joseph Lewis Terry. Enclosed was a hand written letter from Joseph Terry dated September 13, 1878 (ten years before his death in 1888). The names mentioned in this letter are D.A. (C.A.) Walker (Dalton, GA)bought his land and sent to Washington for Joseph Terry's land warrant. Serving with him in the Seminole Indian War disturbances in Florida in which he was wounded are: E. T. Jude of the supreme court of GA, B. Fillmore, Alford Butt and brother of Blaresville, GA, Cornel Chasteen, and Benjamin Chasteen.

Also, there is a hand written letter, dated Dec. 08, 1916 from Mrs. F. M. Stephens, Reidsville, N.C. asking for Joseph Terry's military records and stated that he is an ancestor of hers.

There is also a reply to Mrs. Stephens letter.

Do you know who any of these above mentioned people are?

Also, I had thought previously that the Joseph L. Terry and Dovey Walker on the Indian rolls were of my family, but neither of the records that I sent for are my family. Joseph and Dovina had both passed prior to the rolls ( I finally found their gravesites)

Joseph L Terry, b. Sept. 22, 1864,Whiterock, Wilbarger, TX and is the son of Jos. F. Terry and Catherine Biles Landers. His wife's name is Susie and they have four children at the time.

Dovey Walker, b. April 1880, Franklin County, N.C. daughter of Jane Walker and Harvey Walker. Two siblings.

If you know who's family these two are, I would be glad to send them these records.

Thank you for any help that you might give me. Jacque Watkins

Just got back from Tennessee looking for my father's family but ran into some dead ends.

Walter Griese Terry married Mary Linwood English (usually known as Linwood or Lynwood) around 1914, probably in Oliver Springs, TN. Dad, Robert Glenn Terry was born in Oliver Springs in 1918, he had an older sister Dona Odetta Terry, known as Odetta, probably born around 1915 and a brother Elbert Walter circa 1920.

Walter G. had a brother (?) known as W.C. Terry who had a daughter named Ruth - I recall they said she was adopted. I have articles about them from the 1920's and 30's, indicating they lived in "Kingston Pike" Tenn. Since Kingston Pike was the name of a road, they probably lived in an area of Knoxville. I found 2 W.C. Terry's in Oneida - Huntsville area of TN, but none had any daughters known as Ruth.

I'm new at this. Any words of advice???

I am trying to find additional information on a very large group of Terry’s who have been in northeastern North Carolina since at least the early 1800’s, mainly in Bertie/Hertford/Pitt counties. Information that I have so far is from death certificates, census information and information from older family members. These are my direct ancestors starting with my Father.

(1.) Herbert Lee Terry B Oct. 1917 D July 2003 M Ella Bradley Dec 1938 Born in Hertford Co N.C., Died in Bertie Co. NC

(2.) William Joshua Terry B Jan 1888 D July 1958 M Elsie Farmer Jan. 1912, also m. Florrie Jones; Born in Hertford Co. NC Died in Craven Co. NC

(3.)Hosea Cornelius Terry B 1858 D June 1929 m Martha Holloman Aug. 1879;Born Hertford Co NC D Hertford Co NC

(4.) Richard J. Terry b. Nov 1827 d April 1915 m Melissa Rogerson; born Pitt Co NC died Bertie Co NC. Information obtained from death certificate regarding his Father and Mother

(5.) Hillery H. Terry b around 1800 m Mary E. Outlaw

Born Hertford Co NC , Mary E. Outlaw born in Beaufort Co NC; Hillery Terry was listed in the 1830 Bertie Co. NC. US Federal Census, the line directly under John M. Terry; Information as follows; 3 white males; 2 under 10 yrs, 1 @ 20 – 30 yrs of age. 5 free white females listed as 2 under 10 yrs of age, 1 between 5 – 10 yrs, 1 @ 15 – 20 yrs, 1 between 20 – 30 yrs of age.

(6.) John M. Terry, Listed in the Hertford Co NC 1800 Fed. Census, the township was listed as Capt. Wiggins Captaincy. Listing showed 3 white males 1 under 10 yrs, 1 between 10 and 25 yrs and 1 26 to 44 yrs. Free white females were 5; 1 under 10 yrs 1 10-15 yrs, 1 16-25 yrs 1 25-44 yrs and 1 over 45 yrs

I am finding conflicting information regarding (4.) Richard J. Terry’s Father. Some entries on WFT are listing his Father as Richard Hillery Terry or Richmond H. Terry. These are also listed as having a wife Mary E. Outlaw. I would like to be factual so if anyone has information that would assist with this, I would appreciate hearing from you. I seem to be hitting a brick wall with this as the Terry family is quite large in this area.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has heard of, or has any information on my great great grandfather Lafayette (Lafe) Waggoner. He was a brother to Margaret Waggoner Terry, Mary Ann Waggoner Terry, Rebecca Waggoner Terry and he had two brothers that I know of who were married to Terrys. Daniel Boone Waggoner was married to Mary Ann Terry and John B. Waggoner (not sure if John B. or John D.) was married to Phoebe Jane Terry. That's three girls and two boys...Waggoners married to Terrys.

Lafayette was married to Eveline Reno. They had maybe 4 children born in Texas between 1858 and 1866. So I know they were there by 1858 and I would assume were probably in Fannin County, but haven't been able to document that. Another brother, Joseph Waggoner may have been down there at some point too along with their father, John D. Waggoner. Let me know if I can provide any additional information, or if you have any info on this line.

Thanks, Mike Waggoner

Dear Sir, I am looking for the Terry line from my g grandmother back.

Her name was Ora Bulah Terry b 24Aug1887 d 17jul1935 buried Kersey Cemetery Franklin County, AR. She married Wallace Murphy Gattis b 1 Jan 1878 d 30 May 1967 They lived in the Franklin County/Logan County area but also moved to CA for awhile, later returning to AR.

From the TFH I see their marriage racord. She is listed as the daughter of William Thomas Terry b 15mar1859 d9nov1936 buried in Carpenter Cemetery Franklin County, AR. He is listed on the tombstone as the husband of Inez Shropshire, but this must be a later marriage as my ancestor was born before he married Inez. Ora's mother is listed as Nora Adams.

Are there any Terrys out there who know more about the line of William Thomas and Nora Adams? Thanks for the assistance. My email is qcubed@msn.com

HELP! After 20 years of searching, and numerous trips to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as courthouses all over Arkansas, I am no closer to finding out who the parents of my husbands grandfather were:

Per the census data of 1900 Lincoln County, Ark; 1910 census of Garland County, Ark; 1920 census of Ashley County, Ark; his tombstone, death certificate, and Ark. Death index, the following is all I know:

William Morgan Terry born Jan 1885 in Arkansas. Mother on 1900 census, Sarah E. Terry. Sister on 1900 census, Arizona, born 1888. Shows both parents to have been born in Tennessee.

Morgan married Minnie Lee Brown est 1901-1906, daughter of Thomas F. Brown and Ophelia Batey/Beaty who also lived in Lincoln County, Ark. First child born in 1906.William Morgan died in Ashley County, Ark on 22 Mar. 1921 according to his tombstone, 22 Mar 1923 according to the Ark Death Index. Buried in the Antioch Cemetery in Ashley, Ark.

Had the following known children:

Otis Franklin b: 1906
Sarah Ophelia Elizabeth b: 1908
Arch( Archie) Leroy b: 1910
Richard E. b: 1912
Curtis Paul b: abt 1913
William D. b: 1918
Stella Estelle
Roy Roscoe
Victor Otto b: 1921
Charles Dewitt

All children shown as born in Arkansas. Many are buried beside Morgan and Minnie Lee in Antioch Cemetery in Ashley, Ark.

Many of these children, and many of the grandchildren have turned out to have names that were so called "Family" names as we can find them over and over in the Batey/Beaty line. We suspect some of the names could also be Terry "Family" names, but have no proof. Family Lore has it Morgan and Minnie lived in Texas when first married and had two other children that died very young, one of whom could have possibly been named Stephen. I have no proof of this. Nor have I ever found a marriage license for Morgan and Minnie.

Any help anyone could be would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Cheryl Terry

Looking for Jacob Terry, likely born around 1760 or earlier, who comes to Prince Edward County, Upper Canada (Ontario, Canada) from New York State, by 1800. In 1800, Jacob leases the mill reserve at Hempsteadville (later Rosehall). His death is recorded in 1825 in the records of the West Lake Quakers. On the 1851 census, his son, Jacob, a widower, says he is a Quaker from New York (age 62), suggesting that we should be able to find a Jacob in New York State with a son, Jacob born about 1788 (his tombstone indicates 1786)prior to his arrival in Upper Canada. In 1851, Jacob is living next door to his son Townsend Garrett Terry, Jacob's wife was Sarah Garrett. We think that my gggrandfather, Harvey Leonard Terry, is also a son of Jacob and Sarah.

Following a welcome suggestion from Mike Terry that our Jacob is likely linked to Samuel Terry, I looked at the splendid research done by Carol J. McCraw and also the published work by Stephen Terry but cannot seem to make a link. However, the line of Samuel and Martha Boreman Crane has so many names similar to the ones that are here early and the Bowermans or as we pronounce it "Bormans" also settled here. The entries for Jacob, however, just don't seem to match. In Stephen Terry's work, there is a Jacob born 1725 (Thomas, Thomas, Samuel) whose line is not followed that might be an earlier generation.

I also looked at the 1790 Census listings for Jacob Terry in Connecticut but the family profiles of Jacob and Jacob Jr. don't seem to match. Interestingly, in 1790, there is a Terry family in Montgomery County living next to Lanes and Pettingills, names which also occur in Prince Edward, but, as luck would have it, the first name is missing. The census document appears to have been in a fire and the corner is missing! This family is not listed in 1800 which could fit with Jacob Terry's removal to Upper Canada.

In 1851, Benjamin, about 3 years older than Jacob is living close by with his wife Polly (Andress) and their family. Descendants of Benjamin indicate that he comes about 1802 from Pennsylvania. Benjamin and Polly Terry and their family are in the West Lake Quaker records. Despite the different geographical origins, I think that Benjamin may be a brother of Jacob. Nathaniel may be another brother.

Any further suggestions to make the link to Jacob's ancestors would be welcomed.

Hi,

I would like to know if you have to be male to do the DNA thing. I do have a son, but he does not carry the Terry name because "Terry" was my last name before marriage.

Is there a charge to do this? I might be able to get my brother to do it, but he lives in New Mexico and I live in California. Is it a hard thing to do?

Please advise.

Linda Terry Herd

Editorial Comment

Linda, There is a test for mtdna for females and it would have a combination of your father and mothers DNA. However, only in males  is the Y DNA passed father to son in each generation with a few mutations every several hundred years. If you get your brother or male cousin with the Terry surname to do the test that would nail the male surname Terry for you. It is a very simple test you just swab the inside of your cheek with a small tool they send. Prices have come down in recent years. See this link for details about each test and the cost involved. It should answer most of your questions. Most people acquainted with DNA Genealogy suggest at least the 25 marker Y-DNA test.

Some families pick a male Terry sibling, uncle or cousin and several make a combined contribution to have the test done. The
Family Tree DNA Terry Project site where I am co-coordinator:

http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/t/terry/

This is the Y chromosome database which has thousands of  markers in it to look at so you can get an idea about where scientific genealogy research is heading.

http://www.ysearch.org/

You do not have to submit a DNA kit to put your Terry pedigree line on the site....

Robert:

As you may know, I have been researching the Raiford family for some 40 years. I have just read the material you furnished on your website, and note some important changes that needs to be corrected. It concerns the parents of Robert (61), Maurice (62), John (63), and Margaret Raiford. You have them as the children of Matthew Raiford (12). In fact, Matthew Raiford (12) and his wife were the parents of Matthew Raiford IV and John Raiford. However, they were cousins of the Robert/Maurice/John/Margaret Raiford.

Would you be interested in exchanging information on this family?

Hi there,

Am clearly (judging by the surname) of Terry descent! Am sitting here with my grandad searching for some Terry info and insight into our heritage. We believe our family (my grandad's parents) emigrated to SA from Kent in UK, to settle in South Africa +/- 1880(Kimberley?).Their names were Noah and Miriam Terry.

Just for info, our current generation (that we know of) is mostly still in South Africa, albeit scattered about.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Tracy

Hi Mike,

My name is Robyn Sadler. Found your website today after attending a funeral in Mississippi. I do the family research for my family and had question in regard to your Terry family.

My Mississippi line starts in the Vaiden, West, Kosiesko area of MS. My grandmother was Mabel Claire Fullilove who married Lawrence Bishop Tucker. Mable's mother was Lula Terry who married W. J. Fullilove, records I viewed today at the Carroll County Courthouse. They were married on 2/7/1915, in Carrol County. The 1930 census shows Mabel and Lawrence, their family and Lula Fullilove (listed as mother-in-law) all living together in I believe, Carrol County.

Now, to add a little confusion, the Fullilove family has no record of W. J. marrying any Terry's or any record of my Ggrandmother Mabel. Also, my grandmother always said her grandmother was a Terry. This would help explain the confusion...sort of. Now, you list a Mabel Terry marrying a L B Tucker in 1914. I have a Mabel Fullilove marrying a Lawrence Bishop Tucker in 1915 (L B). Even my grandmother couldn't figure this all out. So here is the verbal record.

Lula Gant Terry Fullilove had Mabel Claire Terry who had Vera Francis Tucker who had Evelyn Claire Morgan who had me.

I feel these are the same people. However, if a divorce or something has happened here, I don't know. But Mabel Claire Terry's mother according to the census was a Fullilove.

Mabel was born on 2/25/1898. Her middle name was Claire. Lula Terry/Fullilove was born as a Gant. Lula's birth date is unknown.

Here is a thought on the matter. Lula Gant married a Terry and perhaps divorced. She then married a Fullilove and had a child . Mabel was then raised as Mabel Terry, her mother keeping her name as a Fullilove. This would explain the family confusion as Lula kept the Fullilove name and W J did not keep her relationship public.

We seem to be a missing blood link to both the Fulliloves and the Terry's. Through Lula, my gggrand mother we most certainly tie into your line. Please inform me of your opinion.

Robyn Sadler

Proby and Nancy B. Proby. In 1823 Halifax Co Va court minutes they are given 7 slaves. The record is telling someone, name not listed, to surrender the slaves to 3 men, one being Zacheriah Rice and they in turn divide them to the 7 Terry & Proby children. Are these the 7 slaves listed in the 1820 census under Sarah Terry-Estate? If so who was her husband?

Dear Mr Terry,

I am researching a line of the Terry family that resided primarily in Cecil County, MD in the 19th Century. Thomas Terry who was born in about 1812 is my great-great grandfather. I know his second wife was a Margaret Armstrong (married 6 November 1850) and I know the names of his children by his first wife (I have no proof of her name, though there is marriage record of a Thomas Terry and a Mary Atwell on 25 July, 1829 in Anne Arundel, MD), and his second. He died abt 1884.

In the late eighteenth century there were various male Terry's (my only resource is census records) in Cecil County but I have no record that these are related. Some of their names are Benjamin Terry, William Terry, Vachel Terry. So I am trying to piece together his ancestors and most importantly find out who were his parents. If you can be of any help I would greatly appreciate it.

I know this sounds stupid but I don't know where to start trying to trace my family tree. My father's name is Jeffrey Terry and his father was George Alexander Terry. We are from England. Do you know where we can start? Would/could we be related?

I am looking for information about Capt. John Terry, who was appointed as the first lighthouse keeper at Sand Point in Escanaba, MI. He died shortly before taking the post and his wife, Mary Terry, took his place. He is reported as being born in St. Johns, Canada, on Aug. 6, 1818. If anyone has any family history to share about this particular Terry family member, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

My name is Alicia Terry or was before I was married. I wanted to ask how I find where my family came from, and are all Terry's somehow related? My husband can trace his family back to the original Pennington that came here. His family is all related. If Terry's are related, then Hi Cousin. I am in the Army stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii USA, so finding family history is posing to be difficult.

Thanks,

Alicia

Terry sr. was born 19th September of 1906 and Marion was born 4th November of 1910 in Linn Mass. They married in Brooklyn
New York. On the certificate it says that Gerald A. Terry Sr. was from Edgewater New Jersey. I cannot locate him in any 1930
Census to indicate where he was born. I know that his father was Andrew Charelworth Terry that married Nora Glenn. It seems that
I have met a dead end. Where do I go from here?

I am looking for the ancestors of Dewitt Thomas Terry. He was born abt 1829 in Va, supposedly in King William County . Later moved
to MO. There he married Matilda Allison abt 1856. I have descendants after that period. However, my problem is that I cannot find
Dewitt's parents or brothers. The story goes that he is a descendant of Thomas Terry who settled in VA. Both Dewitt and Thomas
are family names. However, I cannot find him in the census in VA. I have found him in MO later in life.
Does anyone have any information on this Terry family.

I am looking for William T (maybe Thomas since he has a son by the name of Thomas Joseph) Terry born in New Jersey about 1820. William had a brother by the name of Dave Terry who left his wife for 6 years to join in the California Gold Rush of 1849 and came back broke. William married Martha J Simkins. I don't know if they married in New Jersey or Arkansas. I found a William Terry married to Martha Jane Simpkins on 23 Dec 1843 in Salem New Jersey but a 1870 census in Augusta, Woodruff Arkansas shows William 50 and Martha J Terry 40 and he was about 20 when he married Martha so that doesn't add up. The children on the 1870 Census was Thomas J Terry(14), George Greenwood Terry(8)(George born on June 18 1861) all kids born in Arkansas .Daughter Annie Terry must have married and move out of household. William Terry parents were from New Jersey also. Martha Terry died in 1876 so only William and George were on the 1880 Census in Newport, Jackson, Arkansas. They were both carpenters and living with a Dr James O Bell and wife Amanda J Bell. George Terry married Ella Eliza Calhoon on May 2 1883 then moved to Oklahoma City Oklahoma by the year 1892 because the fifth child was born Charles William Terry on Halloween night. Then moved 50 miles south to Pauls Valley, Garvin Oklahoma and had 4 more children. In 1910 George and family went to Corpus Christi Texas. In about 2 years work dried up and George and family were headed back to Pauls Valley OK. but on the way back Charles W Terry met Carolina Tasin in Victoria Texas and got married. He didn't return with the family to OK. Charles W Terry Sr. had Charles W Terry Jr. and he had Charles W Terry III. I am married to C W Terry III. So I would like to know the parents of Wm Terry and so on. I hope that I have given you enough information. Thanks a bunch, Carolyn

I am looking for information on the family of Lucy Terry and William Williams who lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Lucy left a will in 1788. Is she related to the Terry's of Granville, NC and Edgefield, SC?

I descend from Stephen C. Williams (b. ca 1808 in SC) who married Frances Wash, granddaughter of Zephaniah Clement and Dorothy Jones and granddaughter of William Whitten Wash and Amelia Jones. The Clement and Jones families were intermarried with Terry, Gooch, and Minter families in Granville and Edgefield.

Stephen and Frances Wash Williams had many children including a Pleasant Terry Williams (he went by Terry) and a Maston Williams. Maston is an unusual name, and I see that William Williams and Lucy Terry had a couple of sons named Mastin/Maston. Stephen and Frances were married in Tuscaloosa Co., AL but moved to Newton Co., MS where they died.

I believe that Stephen's father was John Williams born ca 1774 in VA but have no proof and no information on him.

Any information on the family of William Williams and Lucy Terry would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking for anyone who is actively trying to "prove" the line of Samuel b.ca.1772 "of" Carmel, Dutchess (now Putnam), NY. He died before 12 Jul 1812 as proven by his probate, and his marriage to Jenny is proven by his probate in which Jenny releases her dower. She's referred to in the books as Tenny or Tennah Jones, but the release of dower clearly shows it is Jenny not Tenny. I've been trying to find out what the source of the surname Jones is. I'm also trying to find independent proof that this Samuel is the son of Samuel the patriot who married Sarah Ogden. The DAR is not accepting the Terry book as proof.

I have been searching for months for some family tie. We don't seem to be in anyone's family. I would truly appreciate any information or any lead as to where to look. I am at a complete stand still as I have never found Jasper and Dovie at all. I have looked at every census in GA and SC and TX. I have read every issue of TFH that is on the internet.

I have searched every genealogy site for any information. I do not know if Duncan Lewis had siblings. I am including all of the information that I have. Please, if any of these names are familiar to you please contact me. No amount of information would be too small.

Anything would be wonderful.

Jasper William Terry b. SC m. Dovie Walker b. GA (according to 1880 census, Fannin County, TX; they are not listed but Duncan Lewis lists his parents as father b. SC and mother b. Duncan Lewis Terry b. about 1850 in GA. m. Tabitha Ann Brown b. January 1854. Tabitha d.1935 buried in Globe, Gila County, AZ.

They are in the 1880 Fannin County census. (Tabitha's father Andrew B. Brown) Two children: Corra E. 4 years old and Joseph William baby.

The next time I find them they are in 1900 Burnet County census.

Tabitha is a widow and Corra is not there.

Joseph William Terry b.Oct. 1879 m. Edna b. about 1885 (1920 Coke County, Tx census) Joseph d. 1939 buried Globe, Gila County, AZ. One son (that I have found) Thomas N. Terry b. 1905.

They were Miles Terry and Hannah Horton Terry, who were married Jan. 30,1782 in Boutetort County, Virginia, their daughter Annie Terry married Cornelius Estep in Pikeville, Kentucky in 1808,they had ten children:

1 Sabra born June 2,1809
2.Turner born 1811 (my gggrandfather)
3. Celia born 1816
4. Samuel born 1819
5. Andrew born 1824
6Lettie born 1826
7. Maston born1827
8. Elizabeth born( no dates)
9. Anne (no dates)
10. Delilah (no dates)

I have a book written by one of my cousins saying that our ggggrandmother Annie Terry Estep was Cherokee Indian, but I can't find anything in any of the information that mentions any Indian blood on either the Horton's or Terry lines, would appreciate any info I could get on this. I have a lot more info on the Estep line of Annie Terry's family.

And; "KIMBAL POGUE CEMETERY (West of Blum) (11) Terry, Joe Jul. 19, 1897 Sep. 23, 1971 Terry, Edith--wife of Joe (Oma Edith Tally) Oct. 15, 1904 May 3, 1965"

These are my grandparents. My mother's Parents. I know their children (my Aunts & Uncles) but no more beyond my grandparents, that we always lovingly called, "Granny & Papa Terry". Any information on this "Terry" link would greatly be appreciated! Out of their 3 daughters and 3 sons, they have only one child still living (Their oldest), my Aunt Edith. And Papa Terry "Joe Terry" still has one sister still living. This is all I know. But, I am not in contact with them. Please give me any help that you can in tracing this family line!

There are also other relatives related to them in that same cemetery.

Dear Sir,

My great grandfather was Rufus Hanson Terry of Fayette county, West Virginia. My grandmother ( his daughter) told me a story that in the 1890's a lawyer from England came to visit them on their farm. He said Rufus was the last direct inheritor of a sizable estate in England, and he had traveled by boat from England to locate him. he said that unless Rufus went to England to claim the estate in person, it would revert to the crown. My greeat grandfather for some reason or other did not go.

I have always been curious about this and wonder if perhaps you can shed some light on this. My grandmother and her sister swore this was true, but they were only children at the time, however they said they remembered it well as it sparked a huge argument between their father and mother. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

Needing help finding info on my Terry and Baker relatives from Louisa Co., VA. My 3rd ggpa were married in Louisa Co. on Jan. 14, 1828. He was James Overton Baker (b. 1810, VA-d. Mar. 21, 1873, Bloomfield Twp. (Vega), Jackson Co., OH). She was Elizabeth Terry Baker (b. Feb. 3, 1809, VA [Louisa Co.?]-d. Mar. 27, 1889, Wellston, Jackson Co., OH). Elizabeth's parents, who were wed Oct. 9, 1783 in Louisa Co., were Emanuel Terry (1766-1861) and Elizabeth Thomson (Thomason/Thomasson?). On the latter's' marriage record, John Thomson (Thomason/Thomasson?) is listed as Elizabeth's father.

Any info on Emanuel's parentage? Could he have been a native of Louisa Co. or even Orange or Spotsylvania counties in VA?

Any info on other children of Emanuel and Elizabeth Terry besides Elizabeth? Any info on their son Emanuel, Jr.?

Any info on John Thomson/Thomason/Thomasson? Was he married twice and if so, who was the mother of Elizabeth Thomson Terry?

Could James Overton Baker have been a native of Louisa Co.? I believe there were Baker families in neighboring Orange Co.. Could his mother's maiden name have been Overton?

James Overton and Elizabeth Terry Baker's eldest son was my 2nd ggfa. He was William Daniel Baker, b. Apr. 13, 1829, VA (Louisa Co.?)-d. Oct. 19, 1904, Jackson Co., OH (bur. Vega Meth. Church Cemetary). Their seven other known children were Mary Ann, Emanuel A., Charles, Harvey or Harry, Eli, George and Harriet. William D. wed a neighbor, Julia Reed. Mary ann wed Julia's brother John Calvin Reed.

James Overton and Elizabeth had migrated to OH by 1840 where they lived in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH. By the 1850 OH census, they resided across the county line in Bloomfield Twp., Jackson Co..

Any info as to whether the following persons, all born in VA,

found in the 1880 OH census may be related to Elizabeth Terry Baker: (1.)Stephen Terry, age 68, Rutland Twp., Meigs Co.; (2.) Ansel Terry, age ?, Bloomfield Twp., Jackson Co.; (3.)James Terry, Rome Twp., Lawrence Co.; and (4.) Champ Terry, age 69, Grand Twp., Marion Co..

Thank you!

Hello:

For a scholarly article, I am trying to trace information about the American painter, Luther Terry. He was born in Enfield, Connecticut, on July 18, 1813; and died in Rome on October 10, 1900. He is buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.

A number of his paintings hang in major galleries in the United States, notably in the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, Connecticut.

Any information about his antecedents, family, or life will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

He came from Bucks County, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania U.S.A. in 1802 and moved to Murray Township, Northumberland County, Ontario Canada. He married Mary? And had 14 children: William, Lydia, John, Roxy, George, Elizabeth, Palmer, Sarah, Serepta, Benjamin, Jacob, Eleanor, Gordon and Benjamin R. I don't know if there is any connection between the family line you are tracing and my ancestors but I'm trying to find out where Benjamin born 1786 came from. I assume that the Terry family originated in another country but have no idea which country. There has been the mention of the Terry family being Pennsylvania Dutch. Their son William Terry Thompson was b. 21 Apr 1848 in Jasper Co, TX. It is this line from which my father-in-law descends (in fact, his middle name is Terry!). Does anyone have any more specific information on Apphia/Alphia's birth date/place, death date/place? Mike,

You have a lot of good information on your web site, I know you have put a lot of hard work in it. I have been
looking for a lead on my GGrandfather, but haven't seen one yet. He was born in Ireland in 1820 he came to
New York with three bros, His name is Michael Terry. He got his naturalization Papers in 1846 in Ballard, Co. Ky but he applied for them in Franklin Co, Ky. P.R. Jennings and Richard D. Gholson Signed the papers stating he had resided in the U.S.A. for two years. He was married to Mary Ann Jennings they had four children. John Wess, Mary Ann. Nancy and William Henry my grandfather. His first son was born in 1844,so he really wasn't a citizen untill 1846.He supposedly got separated from his bros in New York and never heard from them again. I think they stowaways on the ship as I haven't been able to find any of them. Some how I feel we are kin as your grandfather looks like my grandfather in fact they would pass for twins. If you ever find anything that connects to this please let me know.

Thanks so much and keep up the good work

I found your websites a couple of hours ago. Thanks for this wonderful service. In browsing, I learned that you didn't/don't have much on the Virginia Terrys. I don't, either, but perhaps we can find a match. Several years ago, I asked a genealogist to look into my Gunter line, and he found this about the Terrys. This covers the 1800's in Patrick County, Virginia. My grandmother, May King Martin Gunter, was the George Robert Martin. Hester was born December 10, 1866 and died March 31, 1933. Her parents were Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bolen and Nathan B. Terry, a CSA Captain who was a POW. He later administered a poor house. He was married twice. Nathan's parents were Jane "Jincy" Hall, daughter of Elizabeth Hall and a Mr. Hall, and Samuel Terry, who was born in 1800. They were married 17 Feb 1824. Samuel's parents were Mary "Polly" (maiden name unknown) and Benjamin Terry. Perhaps Benjamin was one of those Ben Franklin Terry's. We don't know. He died in 1815 or 1816. !

I have info on where some of this is found, but that is all I know about the Terry's of my ancestry.

Looking for Michael Terry born in Ireland around 1810 or so. He immigrated from County Cork with several brothers. I have heard New York and the Carolinas as the place they landed but can find no proof. One of his brothers might have been named Reginald (my grandmother remembers hearing stories about a "Reggie" growing up). Mike appears in the 1840 Census living in Ballard/Carlisle Co, KY, married to a Jennings lady and with 4 kids.

I cannot find any proof of Mike Terry's existence in Ireland or his immigration :( He doesn't appear on any passenger lists whatsoever. Not only that, out of all the Terry family trees I have seen he doesn't appear on anyone else's leading me to think that while we may be Terrys, we are in no way connected to anyone else out there.

Hi,

I'm trying to find information on Mary Chimsey Terry. The census records show she was born around 1856 (Father was John H. Terry). I'd like to verify that she married John Henry Sewell. And a list of any children would be helpful as well. This should all have taken place around Bibb/Perry Co, Alabama area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of a marriage in New York of a Todd female to a Terry male? It probably took place in either Palmyra, Ontario Co., NY after about 1800 or Warwick, Orange Co., NY before about 1800.

Mike,

I was born in Charleston, WV on 14 June 1934 to James D. Terry (born Snowhill, WV 12 Jan. 1908, died 1996) and Helen Lee Hawley Terry (born 14 Nov. 1915, died August 1979). My father was born to William Preston Terry and Annie Mae Meede Terry. Their birth dates and death dates are unknown, except for Annie Mae Meede Terry who died in about 1947 at an age over 85. Do you have any information on any of them.

I am reputed to be related to Gen. Terry who was the commander of Custer in the Dakotas and to another Terry who was a Southern General in the Revolutionary War.

There were three Terry brothers who came from Ireland via London in 1629. They were Nathanial, and two others who I can't remember their names. I found this in York England in 1983 and did not make notes.

There is also a famous chocalot maker in York. I am also aware that an Irish Terry left Ireland in the 1500s and went to fight for Spain and King Phillip against the British. They still exist in Spain and make a very fine Brandy.

Would be happy to hear from you. We plan to spend 2 months in England next year and do some work on the genealogy of the Terrys.

Hello

My name is Peter Terry and I come from a small Essex [England] village called Stambridge. I am seeking any information on my unofficially adopted father called Albert Terry.

My fathers original name was Swan but at a very early age he was taken in by a Mrs. Terry and over the years took the Terry surname.

Mrs. Terry originally came from the Reading area and moved to Stambridge when my father was about seven years old.

Mrs. Terry took several children under her wig and four of my fathers step brothers went down on the battleship Hood which was sunk by a u-boat in the last war.

My father was born on 3 March 1908 and died in 1959

Many stories have been told on his origins, but one can say for certain that he had a rich benefactor as early photos of him clearly show him in very good cloths and riding a new trike [unheard of on Mrs. Terry's income as she was married to a farm laborer].

He married my mother in 1934 and was married under the name of Terry which caused a terrible scandal at the time as his birth certificate was showing the name Swan.

My mothers maiden name was Riley and she came from the same village.

Hoping someone out there can help

She was born 02/25/1880 and is buried in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

I have thus far been unable to unearth any TERRY-fying information! Do any of these names ring a TERRY-fying bell, who, by the way was my gggrandfather, John Allan BELL, that is, on my grandmother's side who married a HOWARD.

Kentucky Terry Family From South Carolina:

Hello Terry researchers. My GEORGE TERRY was born on March 29, 1805 according to the 1850 Hopkins County, KY Census, where he also indicates he was born in South Carolina. Another family line (Lindley) was in the Laurens, Edgefield, SC area and believe this is where my George Terry is from. He is buried in Christian County, KY and there is a picture of myself standing next to he and his wife's tombstones in the TERRY CEMETERY there. Does anyone have a Terry family where my George would fit or does anyone know of a TERRY family that went to Hopkins/Christian Counties probably shortly after George was born in 1805 (I'm guessing this).

Any help appreciated. I did read in a SC census transcribed by someone and donated to a SC site, that there were quite a few families in this area of SC that migrated to Christian County, Kentucky. I just have had no luck in the records in these counties identifying George's father (yet). :)

I am seeking information on Nora Adams. She is the mother of Ora Terry (B 1887) who married Wallace Murphy Gattis in 1906 in Franklin County, Arkansas. (Wallace and Ora are my g-grandparents.) Ora's father was William Thomas Terry b 1859 in Hackett, Sebastian, Ar. He was married To Inez Shropshire in 1894 in Franklin County, Ar. He is buried next to his wife Inez in Carpenter Cemetery in Franklin County, Ar. Apparently he was also previously married in 1891 to a Mary Culver in Franklin County, Ar. Before this marriage, he already had at least two children with Nora Adams - E, D. Terry in 1881 and Ora Terry in 1887. I cannot find a marriage record for them.

Other than notes from Ms Payne in the Terry Family Historian, there seems to be little info on Nora.

In a bible record I found at the Butler Library in Little Rock, It is clear that the Terry-Shropshire family knew of the two children E. D. and Ora, as their births and marriages are recorded.

Are there any Terrys out there who have more information on Nora?

Hello, Terry historians!

I am hoping someone can help me, because I've run into a brick wall. I am researching my mother's family of Angelina County, Texas. Here is the information I know of my Terry ancestors, starting with the most recent:

myself, child of Pamela Rose Terry and William H. Risinger, Jr.

Pamela Rose Terry, living, daughter of Newton Everett Terry, Sr. (b. Jan. 28, 1915 in Quitman, TX; d. July 12, 1994 in Huntington, TX) and Jonnie Tharon Griffith (m. Dec. 17, 1939 in Angelina County, TX), living. Other children: Phenelope Jane and Newton Everett, Jr., both living.

Newton Everett Terry, Sr. (b. Jan. 28, 1915 in Quitman, TX; d. July 12, 1994 in Huntington, TX), son of Dutch Terry (b. Sept. 12, 1891; d. Nov. 1974) and Nellie Francis Graham (b. 1886; d. 1960. Other children: Esteline, Oval, Webster Albert "Sprout" and Earline. Dutch later divorced Nellie and remarried, but I don't know the dates or the name of his second wife.

Dutch Terry (b. Sept. 12, 1891; d. Nov. 1974 in Lufkin, TX), son of Albert Webster Terry and "Nannie Ida". Other children: French, German, Jew, Eunice, Maudie, Eula, and Maggie. I have no dates or places of Albert Webster Terry. I know that he was a Methodist minister (have a marriage certificate which he officiated in 1919). I do not believe he was an ordained minister, though; I think he was a circuit rider or some such. I also have no idea whether "Nannie Ida" was a nickname or her real name, and no idea of her surname.

If these names sound familiar to anyone, please help! I'd love to know more about where they lived and who his family was.

Thanks!

My line came out of VA in late 1700s, to SC. My g. g. grand- father, Joseph Terry, born in Edgefield SC ca 1785 to either John or William Terry (brothers). He migrated to W. KY ca 1805, married there in 1806, moving to C. MS shortly after 1810, to Claiborne Co., then to Madison Co. and was in Rankin Co. by 1826 where he died in 1864. One of his 16 children was my g. grandfather, Lewis Saxon Terry (whose mother was Joshua Saxon). My dilemma is - Which brother, William or John, in SC was Joseph's father? Can you help? Sebastian County, Arkansas - I am descended from Thomas Terry (12 Dec 1808-5 Sep 1890) who is buried by his daughter, Sarah "Sallie" Fulgham in Old Union Cemetery, Sebastian County, AR. Is there any proven link between him and William Jasper Terry (3 Jul 1841-3 Apr 1921) buried in an unmarked grave east of my g.grandfather John Dill in Shiloh Cemetery, Sebastian County? Two of William's daughters married two of John Dill's sons.

My grandfather's name was Archibald Hiram Terry. He was born in Michigan in 1886 according to the 1910 census. His father was Lewis Watson Terry, also born in Michigan, according to the 1880 Michigan census. My father's name was Lewis Newman Terry. I have seen many of these same names on Michigan census records, including 1870 and 1850, but I cannot find where my line through Lewis Watson Terry goes. There is a Newman Terry who shows up on the Clinton County , Michigan census of 1880 and 1870. He is on the Lenawee County census of 1850. I am not sure if Newman Terry is Lewis Watson Terry's uncle. It might be so, since my father's middle name is Newman. If you could give me information or allow me to know where I might find information about Lewis Watson and his parents I wopuld greatly appreciate it. Thank you, May Terry Drummond
