EDITOR'S NOTES
On July 23, 1986 the TFH received an excellent review in the El Paso Times Column "All in your Family", by Mary Margaret Davis.
Excerpts from a letter to the editor. "It is impossible for me to review all the family publications that cross my desk. However, in your case I would like to make an exception. It is quite well done...." Quote from "Shaking your Family Tree", editor Myra Vanderpool Gormley, of the Tacoma Washington News Tribune, July 19, 1986.
These folks are talking about the June '86 issue which I sent to several editors of genealogical columns in newspapers hoping for a review article. Jay Terry's contribution on South Carolina was exceptional and it was mentioned quite often. My thanks to Jay for another "WHAM-O" with the Alabama Censuses. With a little more primary documentation these should be very useful to members.
Jay also sent complete Arkansas and Georgia censuses up to 1860 for Terry's and these are ready. Write to the Editor if you are interested. The editor is about 1/3 done with typing the 1910 Alabama Census that Earnest Terry sent some time ago.
I have the promise of the donation of a 300 baud modem by the end of September, hence the publication of a modem number. Right now it is not functioning. Have not figured out the logistics of how to make it run yet. But plan to make it automatic so you can log on when it is most convenient for you.
I should mention Jackson Terry of Harris County, Georgia came to visit the editor. Thanks again for dinner and the delightful conversation. Also spoke with Woodford Terry who indicates his book is on the way to the printer.
93
It covers some 10,000 descendants of James Terry of Granville Co., NC. If your Terrys are from this area or Putnam-Jackson Co. TN, it should be very helpful to you. If you're like me though, any Terry book is a must so you can figure out who is whom. Contact: Mr. Woodford Terry, 111 Wiltshire Dr., Oak Ridge TN 37830.
The publisher has requested I do the December 1986 issue early so I am about 20 pages from completion. It has the concluding Alabama Census plus more of course. It will be slim on queries so be sure and send your surnames for the Terry and related surnames computer index. If I get a query on your names I will punch it up on the computer so you can make the connections with other researchers in the mean time. I need a breather to catch up on the correspondence. IF YOU COULD RENEW YOUR SUBSCRIPTION EARLY, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. This is important since I have to get TWO quarterlies to the printer BEFORE SEPTEMBER!
Thanks to all members for your support both financially and otherwise. Without the little extras from the members, I couldn't do it.
Mike Terry,
Editor

COVERING THE TERRY-TORY by Robert W. Terry 4900 Springdale Road Cincinnati OH 45247
This is being written on the eve of the Statue of Liberty rededication in New York harbor and I wonder whether one or more of my direct ancestors lived near there a century or more before the statue was erected. Remembering editor Mike Terry's admonition about documentation, I still must rely on those dubious "educated guesses" that demand proof.
My search, and that of several other Terry family researchers, is concentrated on the Robert Terry who left London, England in July, 1635 and with his brothers, Thomas, 28, and Richard 17, landed in Massachusetts later that year. Robert was listed as age 25 at the time.
"Notes of the Terry Family in the U.S." and other sources say that Richard and Thomas settled in Southold, on eastern Long Island, New York, while Robert settled in Flushing. (The early Dutch settlers who preceded the English called it "Vlissingen" after a town in Holland.) Apparently, the English Anglicized the name to Flushing.
Descendants of Richard and Thomas Terry, of Southold, are much easier to trace than those of Robert. Some genealogists have told me that a fourth brother, John, came to Massachusetts aboard the "Abigail" in 1635 and joined his brother, Robert, at Flushing. The other three brothers came to this country aboard the "James."
"Early History of Southampton, N.Y." says that the early settlers of eastern Long Island went from Lynn, Mass. in 1640. Richard Terry is said to
94
have become recorder of deeds and clerk of court at Southold, where he plastered the records with the names and birth dates of his children.
In that Southampton history is mentioned of an Indian deed of 1640, dated Dec. 12 of that year and listing "Indians and Owners of Eastern Long Island." The owners include: Robert Terry, Abraham Pierson, Edward Stephenson, Joseph Howe, Thomas Whitehouse, Joseph Griffiths and William Howe.
"William Wells and his Descendants" includes mention of Robert Terry, still in Southampton in 1643. Three other settlers and Robert signed an agreement to repay William Kieft, governor of New Netherlands, for an advance of salt, the repayment to be in grain. Robert, like other non-conformist Terrys, made his mark with a circle (o), not an (x).
Governor Kieft, later replaced by Peter Stuyvestant, sailed for England aboard the "Princess," carrying many documents of his administration that would be genealogical treasure today. The ship was wrecked off Wales, Kieft was drowned and the records were lost.
Robert Terry apparently left Southampton, Long Island, for the Flushing area since "History of Queens County, New York" says he was one of 20 patentees at Flushing, the original tract granted in 1666.
"A History of Long Island, N.Y." by Peter Ross, Vol. 1, lists the early Flushing settlers but Robert Terry's name is not on it. The patent, renewed in 1685 by Governor Dongan, lists "John Terry," not Robert.
However, Robert Terry was in or near Flushing in 1663, when he was executor of the will of Richard Britnell (also listed as Brutnell), who in July 1643, received a patent for 25 morgens (about 50 acres in "Mespath Kill," apparently in or near Flushing. Britnell bequeathed "my loving friend, Robert Terry" his brewing tools, tobacco, swine, linen bedding, white cow and calf, yearling steer and calf." In one part of the will he refers to "Goodman Terry, off Flushing." I am told that "Goodman" was a title of respect, not a proper name.
Robert was still around Flushing in 1670-1673. The New York Historical Society "Abstract of Wills, Liber 1-2" lists him with John Hinchman as witnesses to the will of a John Marshall. That will was probated Jan. 3, either 1670 or 1671.
On Feb. 14, 1670 or 1671, Robert is listed as a witness to a will of a John Marston, who like Marshall above, is listed as being "of Flushing". Three other Marstons and Joseph Thorne joined Robert Terry in witnessing the will. Oddly, the executor of the Marston will was the John Hinchman, who witnessed the Marshall will with Robert. (Robert witnessed the Marshall will with an "x",not the circle of his earlier mark.)
A researcher at the Suffolk County, N.Y. Historical Society wrote that Robert Terry was a magistrate at Flushing in 1657, which I question since he was unable to sign his name. The report also said that Robert witnessed the will of John Masters, of Flushing on the date I have him witnessing the Marston will.
95
If Robert was "off Flushing" at the time of the Britnell will, he was in Flushing by 1673, when his name appears in the will of Edward Farrington, of Flushing, Queens County, N.Y. Robert is listed as "son" in the will, but I take it to mean "son-in-law," probably the husband of Farrington's daughter, Sarah.
Farrington's will left his son, Matthew, 20 acres of land lying "at the east end of Robert Terry's lot and the meadow formerly called Gray's Meadow."
That's where I lose track of Robert; neither have I been able to learn anything about the John Terry listed with Flushing patentees of 1685, who still included an Edward Farrington, plus a Matthew and Thomas Farrington.
By consulting my Rand-McNally, I learn that "off Flushing" may have meant Riker's Island, some distance from Lady Liberty's location. So, I'll just watch the festivities on TV and hope that some day I can run down the Terrys of Flushing.

ON CONVERSATIONS WITH DR. LUTHER TERRY by S. D. Terry 4002 Hamilton St., Hyattsville MD 20781 (Excerpted from a letter to editor, dated Jan 14, 1986.)
Regarding Dr. Luther Terry from Red Land, Alabama. I happened to be in the outer office of Sen. Lister Hill (D-Ala.) shortly after Sen. John F. Kennedy had been elected President. I was awaiting my "turn" to see one of the Senator's staff members, when I heard someone (Senator Hill?) from the next room say something like, "Well, it was nice seeing you, Dr. Terry. We'll look forward to seeing you again real soon." At the mention of the name Dr. Terry, I look around wondering if anyone were addressing me by adding an "honorary doctorate" to my name. Seeing no one addressing me, I thought they must have said, "Dr. Perry" or perhaps "Dr. Cherry" or some similar name. Within a few moments, a man made an exit from the next office. As he passed by me, with a smile, he greeted me with a "Hello". I still didn't know who he was. The next morning the picture of Dr. Luther Terry was on the front page of the Washington Post & Washington Star. Dr. Terry was the first appointed of the newly elected President Kennedy. Dr. Terry had been appointed to the Surgeon General of the U. S.
Approximately 15 years later, I had lunch with Dr. Luther Terry. We went to the Honate? (& he paid for both meals). And I told him about the above episode. We also compared notes about Terry family relationships and although we didn't "pin it down" conclusively, felt that there was a strong probability that my and his Terry relationship went back to the Carolinas. One book he referred me to, "A Cloud of Witnesses," by Herman Floyd Johnston (ca. 1973, Tuscaloosa, AL) refers to his genealogy and also mentions an ancestor of mine in S. C., Daniel Terry.
97
Editor's Note: Mr. Spurgeon Terry has been most gracious in sending me a large quantity of his Terry research which will make it's way into the TFH.

NOTES ON STEPHEN TERRY FAMILY OF CHESTER SOUTH CAROLINA
by Mike Terry
For years I had wondered about a Robert "Terry" Johnston in Pickens Co. Alabama who had married in Pickens Co. July 7, 1840 Mildred Caroline Terry b. 24 Nov 1822 [a daughter of John Wesley Terry 1786-1847 and Emily Taliaferro 1803-1846].
In notes I received from Spurgeon Terry was information which certainly cleared up some of my questions. Robert Terry Johnston, according to "History of Pickens County" pub. 1856 by Nelson F. Smith, was born in Fairfield District, South Carolina on 18 September 1816 from Irish parentage. Robert T. Johnston indicates his father brought him to Tuscaloosa, Alabama when about two years old. His father was "the late" David Johnston who had married Sarah C. Terry a daughter of Stephen Terry d. 1807 and Mary Sutton of Fairfield District, South Carolina. Sarah C. [Cookson] Terry Johnston d. in Harris Co. Georgia August 28, 1858. Mary Sutton Terry and most of her children are buried in Harris Co. Georgia according to Mr. Jackson Terry*.
Among a list of Pickens Co. officers is J. T. Terry listed as "Register, &c". Also a list of "lawyers and legal firms at the present time" (ca. 1856) included Robert T. Johnston, Pickensville and John T. Terry, Carrollton....Of the above, "Johnston and Terry are associated".
So it appears that John Taliaferro Terry and his brother-in-law, Robert Terry Johnston, were partners.--Finally some connection between the Fairfield and Chester County Terry Families!
The questions to answer are: Why was he named Robert Terry Johnston? How are the early Stephen Terry's in South Carolina related? Is there a connection now between Thomas and James Terry and John Sutton of King William or Caroline Counties Virginia?
*The editor is expecting some early Harris Co. Terry information from Mr. Jackson Terry of Harris Co. GA.
* * * * *
BENJAMIN TERRY OF ABBEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA
Another item that bothers me is Benjamin Terry 1755-1831 who married, in Guilford County, North Carolina 1777, Susannah Carruthers. He was another son of Stephen Terry who died 1769 in Craven County South Carolina. What was Benjamin doing in Guilford County, North Carolina?.
In the Abbeville records we find Benjamin Terry and Frances Young were involved in the will of James Carruthers. I think they were brothers-in-law who had married Carruther sisters.
98
The obituary in the South Carolina Columbia Telescope and South-Carolina State Journal issue Nov. 20, 1829 indicates the following: "Died in Abbeville district, on Thursday, the 4th instant, the Rev. James Crowther, in the 65th year of his age. The deceased emigrated from England during the Revolutionary war and settled in Abbeville. He belonged to the Baptist Church of which he had been a member upwards of 35 years..."
Perhaps the Reverend was in Guilford County on religious matters and that explains why Benjamin married there. It does indicate he was in Abbeville for quite a period of time.
