~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EDITOR Robert "Mike" Terry EDITOR'S NOTES
I have ordered an item that I find very useful, both as a family resear- cher and as a person in the publishing business. It is FAMILY PERIODICALS compiled by Merle Ganier, 2108 Grace St., Fort Worth TX 76111. It lists all family publications in print as of 1983 and also genealogical columns that appear in several newspapers. The 1983 edition contained 23 pages that were done on a computer. It also notes whether it is a quarterly or a newsletter and the cost of the item. The cost is $4.00 and Texans should add 20 cents tax.-- IT'S A VERY GOOD INVESTMENT AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. I have confused many readers by using several names for myself. I am all of the following: "Robert Mike Terry", "Robert M. Terry", "rmt", "Mike Terry","The Editor". Not to be confused with Robert W. (Ward) Terry of Cincin- nati, Ohio, who writes the great article "Covering The TERRY-TORY." I have always been referred to as "Mike" Terry by my family and use the legal signa- ture of "Robert M. Terry". When filling out forms I am often called "Bob" and "Terry" and all of the various combinations that Robert Mike Terry might pro- duce. While growing up, I often had other problems as well. We lived in the Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma farming community and received our telephone service [a modern seven-party line] from this town. We received our mail from Binger, Oklahoma. I attended Oney High School which was often confused with Olney, Texas. So they changed the name to Albert, Oklahoma. So one side of the street, which includes the post office, is Albert and the other side of the street is called Oney. The sign leading to the crossroads which takes in the whole town is labeled Albert (Oney). So you might say that I often shied away from filling out forms and meeting new people if I didn't have too. Where is Oney? Oh, about 25 miles from Anadarko. Where is Anadarko??--We lived about 65 miles South West of Oklahoma City.--So much for me. I really appreciate those who are hanging in there. We lost a few due to the cost increase but have received more new members. In order to increase the coverage and get quality we have to pay for it. Although many of the items you see in the TFH are donated by readers, some of it has to be purchased. I order updates regularly on Terry marriages and other items that I think might be of general interest. I try and buy Terry books as they are printed and will share with you what I have. Some of these items cost much more than the cost of the TFH itself.--Anyhow, thanks for the kind words that I have received from many members and I have received several very positive comments. I would like to concentrate on New York, Connecticut, and Virginia as these areas seemed to have spawned early TERRY families in the United States. It seems that much of the info in the TFH is from Southern States. This is not entirely planned, but much of the material I receive is related to these areas. I also need to increase my data base for marriages, wills, deeds, bible re- cords, military records, etc. for areas outside of the South. I have given priority to areas outside the South and have printed almost every item that I have received. I will offer to reimburse members for xeroxing costs and postage if you submit information from outside of the Southern Region. If the cost is is more than $5.00 let me know before you incurr the cost. Also let me know what the source of the information is so I can reference it in the Terry Family Historian. Sometimes I have to write to an editor or publisher to get permis- sion to print it in the TFH. I will also trade items in the TFH if you want to barter. Several members whose names have been published in the TERRY FAMILY HIS- TORIAN are not active researchers and have noted the same. If you receive inquiries, please pass them on to the Editor and I will correspond with them. I am, as always, behind in my correspondence. I sometimes print articles submitted by others; I do not vouch for what is in them. Nor am I trying to discount research accomplished by others. I will certainly print any corrections that come to my attention. If you wish to address anything in an article, please feel free to do so. The Editor is still working on the 1900 Census for Texas and I hope to have it ready for printing by this Spring. If you have specific questions about anyone in Texas at this time, please write. If you can give any identifying information on TERRY FAMILIES in Texas ca. 1900 or in Arkansas ca. 1880, it will be added to the information as notations. If you can identify any TERRY's in any marriage listings this will also be added as notations. I would welcome any census dated including Terry families, particularly that which is county wide or has notations with it.
HERE'S HOPING YOU HAVE A TERRY-FYING 1984
COVERING THE TERRY-TORY
by
Robert W. Terry 4900 Springdale Road Cincinnati OH 45239
Our Terry surname has not produced any Presidents of the United States, nor has it produced international or national leaders who would make the name widely known. We Terry descendants cannot compete with the Cabots or Lodges, the Kennedys or Roosevelts, the Vanderbilts, Gettys, or Hearsts. However, a few of the surname achieved prominence in their respective fields attract the interest of persons like myself, who get sidetracked in history while pursuing genealogical research. I suspect that some of you rea- ders are guilty of the same failing, if, indeed, it is a failing. The following are some of the Terrys who have stimulated my interest in their lives and times, although there appears to be no genealogical connection to my particular tribe: NATHANIEL TERRY, member of the House of Burgesses of Virginia for Halifax County from 1768-1775 and a member of the Williamsburg (Va.) Convention of 1776. I suspect that he heard Patrick Henry's impassioned "Give Me Liberty or Death" remarks and took part in the arguments leading to the Declaration of Independence. What really captured my attention was the statement in a 1917 publication of the Kentucky Society of Colonial Wars that Nathaniel presided "at the last court held under the crown and the first held under the Commonwealth in 1776." I try to picture the elderly gentleman, hiding his personal feelings while serving as an impartial presiding officer over the fateful discussions. WILLIAM TERRY, known to sports fans as "Memphis Bill," the former baseball player and manager of the New York Giants, may be the one person whose exploits publicized the surname all over the nation. Bill Terry fell into the same category as the immortal Babe Ruth, a pitcher who was switched to the everyday lineup because he could hit. I discovered him with the help of my father, an avid baseball fan, when Bill Terry was pitching for the Toledo (Ohio) Mud Hens. Memory says that after he was called up by the Giants and installed at first base, he hit better than .400 at least one season. DR. LUTHER TERRY, former head of the American Medical Association. Just the other day, I learned that it is 20 years since he warned that cigarette smoking is dangerous to one's health, and that he is disappointed that the American public generally has ignored his advice. WILLIAM AND WILLIAM R. TERRY, contemporary officers in the Confederate Army who both rose to the rank of general. One of them served in the U. S. Congress after the war and was Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in Virginia; the other became superintendent of the Virginia Penitentiary. ELI TERRY, the Connecticut clockmaker who learned the trade from Thomas Harland, a clockmaker in London before he migrated to New England. Eli Terry in 1809 formed a company with Silas Hoadly and another man, Seth Thomas, whose name still is perpetuated in American-made clocks. I recall mixed emotions at an antique show at a nearby mall, when I saw a genuine Eli Terry mantel clock, still in perfect running condition. What irritated me was that someone, possib- ly the dealer, had pasted a decal of a 50-STAR FLAG on the glass case. Sources say that Eli enlisted the aid of his brother, his three sons, four nephews and several grandchildren in the production line. The last of the There are other Terrys of local and regional prominence, of course. In "Park and Allied Families of Kentucky" I found mention of James Terry, an attorney in Edgefield, S. C., whose obituary was written by Henry Clay. The wife of James Terry was the former Mary Anne Hutchenson, daughter of a wealthy Augusta, Ga. family, who it was said, had as her bodyguard an African prince who wore a ring in his nose. I couldn't find my notation of a Terry in the federal government credited with some innovations in postage stamps. Neither could I find the Terry who invented and patented a stretcher for use by medical, hospital and emergency aid personnel, but I recall them. My curiosity also has been stimulated by the names of Fernando Belaunde- Terry, president of Peru in South America; the Spanish firm of Fernando Ade Terry, Ltd., makers of brandy and fine wines (I have samples); the Terry candy makers of York, England, and countless others. And some day I would like to determine that "terry cloth" in the diction- ary might be associated with the numerous Terrys who were members of the weavers' guild in London in the 17th century.
This editor, has always been intrigued by the Terry Families in Lawrence County, Alabama since I published the account of the TERRYS THICKER THAN COTTON IN LAWRENCE COUNTY [See June 1983 TFH, pp. 93-95.] I have since received info from Spurgeon D. Terry Jr. of 4002 Hamilton St., Hyattsville MD 20781 who wrote the following:
RE: TERRY FAMILY REUNIONS
There is in Lawrence County Alabama a "United Terry's Club", Courtland, Alabama. The Club meets each Labor Day at a site located between Courtland and Moulton on property owned by one of the Terry's. The 1983-1984 President is Clyde Terry and the secretary is Mable Terry. The Annual membership fee is $1.00; a card is sent to each member. Write: Redus Terry, P. O. Box 457, Moulton AL 35650. This reunion is an all-day picnic. Although I have never yet attended, I plan to next year. A first cousin of mine did attend one year. Members of Congress and U. S. Senators often attend, I am told from newspaper accounts. (Lawrence County is located in the northwestern part of Alabama, near Muscle Shoals, and close to the Tennessee border.) A publication, TAP ROOTS, is pub- lished which covers that NE Alabama area, but I have not yet subscribed. The UNITED TERRY CLUB welcomes members; why don't you join also? I have written to some of my contacts there and suggested that they subscribe to the TFH. I recently purchased from the National Archives a very handy and useful book (304 pages "chock" full of information useful to genealogical resear- chers). It is GUIDE TO GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES. I paid $17.50 for the paper-back. The hard cover costs a few $ more ($21.00). It was published by the National Archives Trust Fund Board in 1983 and is available from Guide, National Archives, Box 124, Washington DC 20408. Checks should be made payable to: National Archives Trust Fund Board. (Do not send cash.)
SNAFU IN ENID, OKLAHOMA
This is part of a letter from Ray Ward, Rt 3, Box 63, Gatesville TX 76528. I thought it was interesting. During W. W. II I was stationed at the Enid A. F. Base for basic flight training. Aside from the time in combat I came about as near to getting killed as I ever did while I was flying on a Night Cross - Country from Enid. It was a royal SNAFU [military talk for situation normal all fouled up] from the start-- the crisis came when I was letting down to 500 feet [the altitude at which we flew over approach downwind & base legs.] I had forgotten that on cross country our altimeters were set at atmospheric pressure so that when the plane was on the ground, the altimeter would show the field elevation not "0" as we were accustomed to regular training landings. As a result, I nearly flew into a windmill and farmhouse out NW of the base. Enid was a near miss. I am interested in getting a personal computer for genealogy, word proces- sing, and a couple of sets of books. Can you tell me the kind you got & why. Would you do differently if you had it to do over? [Note from the Editor: I will send you a copy of my answer to Mr. Ward if you are looking at computers.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WILLIAM MORRIS 1755-1830
William Morris, third son of Thomas Morris, was born on October 30, 1755, in Halifax County, Virginia. As a young person, he moved with his family from Virginia to South Carolina. They settled on Turkey Creek. Here, in about 1777, he married "Sary" Terry, daughter of Stephen Terry, who owned a land grant of 200 acres in Chester County, S. C. Stephen had acquired this tract of land on July 10, 1776, and from it his son conveyed 54 1/4 acres to William Morris on January 23, 1793. William later sold the tract to Thomas Stokes, and apparently at this time moved to Greenville County, S. C. Later, he moved to Abbeville, S. C. In 1777, at the age of 22, William joined Capt. Robert Porter's Co., Tryon, N. C., in the Continental Army. Among other engagements, his regiment fought in the Seige of Charleston. For at least 4 years William must have followed the excitement of the war and sympathized with the efforts of the colonists to resist the English armies. The Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773, Paul Revere's thrilling ride in 1775, and the Battle of Lexington had developed a united war effort, and on June 14, 1776, when Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes a the national flag, the citizens were ready for the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. William's military record is taken from Ga. Pension Record, p. 18; Roster of Rev. Soldiers by L. L. Knight, pp. 314-443; Saunders and Knight's Roster of Ga. Probate Land Lottery, Vol. 16, p. 423. This data has been accepted by the D. A. R. society and several descen- dants of William have joined the D. A. R.'s and the S. A. R.'s. In 1822, William moved to DeKalb County with his son John. Here he became a leading citizen. He was one of the first Commissioners appointed to govern Decatur. No mention is made of his wife, "Sary", after he left South Carolina. She would have been 65 years old and may have died in South Carolina. His three youngest children, Benj., Caty, and Rhody, were 27, 25, and 23 years old and it is assumed that they were married and remained in South Carolina. If William left a will, which would have named his survivors, it would have been recorded in the DeKalb County Courthouse. This burned in 1842 and the fire destroyed many of the documents. William died in 1830. He lived to see his new county develop into a community of prospering farms, his family establish a Methodist Church, and his native America become a free and independent nation. He is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, where his grave was marked by the D.A.R. William Morris and his wife "Sary" had the following children. Their names and dates of birth were taken from the family Bible owned by Gordon Morris:
William Morris (father) b. Oct. 30 1755 d. 1830 "Sary" Morris (mother) b. July 22, 1757 Elizabeth b. March 26, 1779 -------- b. March 8, 1781 John b. May 15, 1783 William Jr. b. July 9, 1787 Priselah b. April 13, 1789 Sarah b. Dec. 24, 1790 Garrett b. March 31, 1792 Benjamin b. Jan. 21, 1795 Caty b. May 28, 1797 Rhody b. Sept. 23, 1799 [Editor's Notes: This account was originally written by Mrs. E. H. LeVert, Jr. and was contained in a letter to Mrs. A. B. Smith of Jonesboro GA from McClure M. Reynolds of Decatur GA. The letter was written in 1978. The notes and letters were sent to me by Marty Morris, ARAMCO, Box 10501, Dhahran, Saudia Arabia. Sarah Terry is the sister of John W. Terry of Chester SC. This is also the direct line of Mr. William S. Morris, 2580 Utah St., Napa CA 94558. There are a few errors in the account. One is the date on Stephen Terry's land which was about 1766 not 1776. I was particularly interested because we have never been able to find Revolutionary records for John W. Terry 1752-1834. Perhaps this might suggest some leads. Cedar Grove Cemetery is in Conley, DeKalb County GA.]
Notes from Ethel McGill of Paris, TX who is researching the Rogers surname.
The only TERRY surname listed in the 1870 census for Lamar Co. TX was:
Elizabeth TERRY age 61 b. TN P. J. age 21 b. AR
I failed to write down whether P. J. was male or female.
...Then in the 1880 Census of Lamar Co. TX I found only one Terry listed:
Moses Terry 45 farmer AL NC NC Mary 40 wife AL AL AL Lizzie 11 LA Ella 9 " Anna 7 TX John G. 5 TX Jinnie 3 TX Daughter 8/12 Sept. TX
This could not have been Moses Green Berry Hill Terry that married Martha M. Rogers (my great-Aunt) as she died Sept. 28, 1880 in [Prescott City] AR. Some of the childrens names are the same (not all) and the birthdays are different. Also, on the 1880 Census I found that Sol Bennett 48 b. AL (SC - GA) was living with his brother-in-law, John Black, none of his children were listed. I found James E. Watson on the 1880 Census. I believe this is your James Eli Watson [who m. in Union Co. AR Mary Elizabeth Terry].
Letter from Cordie (Terry) Folsom to Robert M. Terry dated October 2, 1983. The notations in brackets are the Editor's and certainly not the mistakes of "cousin" Cordie.
Dear Cousin:
Hugh McClure Terry gave me the picture when I was a young girl. I'm quite sure the writing on the back was his. We always called him Uncle Mac. After my mother [Ada Marcum] died when I was 12 yrs, old, I lived with Uncle Sam (his son) and Aunt Cora [Marcum] Terry until I married at 18. We lived a short distance apart and I went to Uncle Mac's to milk the cow for milk for both families. I wrote you once that I blacked out one time when I went over to milk, Uncle Mac got to me without his crutches, but after I was alright, he couldn't take a step without them. Strange eh? Uncle Sam [Terry] had a cotton gin over by Uncle Mac's. I kept books there. His brother Ed [Terry], had the telephone office and I worked there when he was out. I also played the piano at our church. Uncle Sam had the first automobile in our little town [Milton or Blossom TX, I am not sure?] and I drove it at 16 years old, a 1911 model Rio. I knew so much more about Uncle Mac than I did about my grandfather [Moses Green Berry Hill Terry.] I really didn't know where he died. I knew his second wife and her son, Bob Phillips. I would like a print of him if you have one. I still haven't found my father and mother's picture, but will send it to you if I ever find it. I hope you can read this scribbling. I was supposed to have surgery on both hands. Had it on the left without success, so I won't have it on the right. I can barely do anything with them. But they don't keep me from playing games and dancing at 89 next month.
Yours Truly
Cordie Folsom
[Editor's Note: Cordie Terry Folsom is the daughter of Rufus Leon "Lee" Terry and Ada Marcum. Her grandfather is Moses Green Berry Hill Terry who is a grandson of Major Stephen Terry of Atlanta. The Uncle Mac she speaks of is the Editor's great-great grandfather. His picture is on the cover of the September 1982 issue of the TFH. The writing on the back of her picture is as follows and is the handwriting of Hugh McClure Terry. The information indicates the picture was taken ca. 1915.]
ROBERSON WILLIAM TERRY OF CAMPBELL COUNTY GEORGIA & FAMILY
by Nancy Cornell
JOHN TERRY AND ANTHA WRIGHT
John and Antha Terry were both born in South Carolina. John was born about 1799, and Antha was born in 1805. They were married in South Carolina in 1822 according to the R. W. Terry Bible. Their three eldest children were born in South Carolina. Louisa was born in 1824; Roberson was born 26 September 1825; Nancy was born in 1829 (Reference: Terry Bible and census records). Sometime after Nancy's birth, they moved to Coweta County, Georgia, in time to be listed on the 1830 Coweta County census. Their fourth child, John W., was born in Georgia in 1830. The John Terry listed in the 1830 Coweta census also had a white woman between the ages of 70 and 80 living with him. By 1840, John Terry was living in Campbell County, Georgia. All of his children were born by then and the elderly woman was no longer with him. According to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Campbell census records, John and Antha lived in Campbell for the remainder of their lives. The tax digests of Campbell show they owned 8 slaves and were property owners in both Campbell and Cobb counties. John Terry died on 20 January 1870, and his wife died 24 September 1875, according to the Terry Bible. It is not known where they are buried.
ROBERSON WILLIAM TERRY
Roberson Terry was born in South Carolina on 26 September 1825 (Terry Bible). He married his first wife, Eliza Abercrombie, on 28 October 1847 in Campbell County, Georgia (Campbell Co. Marriage Book B, p. 84). They were blessed with six children. Eliza died on 26 June 1860, five days after the birth of twins. The twins also died in that year (Terry Bible). Roberson's second wife was Mary Louisa Bomar, daughter of Armstead Bomar of Campbell County. They were married on 15 January 1863 (Campbell Co. Marriage Book B, p. 408). Roberson Wm. and Mary Louisa had eleven children. The house in which they lived was located on the east side of Hall Road off Highway 92, west of Fairburn, Georgia (Campbell County, now Fulton County). It burned in 1982. According to my grandmother, Callie Terry Jones, Roberson (her grand- father) was a shoemaker. He owned a store which also housed the Post Office for the vicinity. She says he would often stop travelers in the road to find out the latest news. Roberson enlisted as a 3rd Lieutenant in Company B, 7th Regiment Georgia State Guards on 4 August 1863. This company was organized by Captain Robert J. Tuggle in August, 1863, for local defense. It was organized for a six month period of service, and was disbanded on February 4, 1864. R. W. Terry is listed as "present" on Company Muster Rolls from 4 August 1863 through December, 1863. The last muster roll, dated February 4, 1864, states he was absent on sick furlough which had been extended. My grandmother Jones says he was crippled with arthritis, which may explain his leave of absence. Roberson William Terry died on 30 September 1893. His wife, Mary (b. 28 Dec. 1841) died 4 November 1922. They are buried in the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery on Highway 92, west of Fairburn, Georgia.
ADDITIONAL NOTES GLEANED FROM FAMILY GATHERINGS
When the Terry clan gets together, it is difficult to keep track of all the many stories being told at the same time. Sitting in a circle around my grandmother's dining table (Callie Terry Jones), one member tells a childhood tale while another is talking about an entirely different story. Most of the stories do not have beginnings or endings, but vividly paint a picture of life as it was eighty-plus years ago. Callie's father, John Irvin Terry (son of R. W. & Mary Terry), was a farmer, a fiddler, and a teacher. He taught school at Enon in Campbell County, and lived near Mount Vernon Church. His father and his grandfather had lived there before him, as had the Jones, Dorris, McClures and many other pioneer families of that area. John played the fiddle for square dances when all the families gathered for quilting and corn huskin' and dancing. John's children went to school in the one room school house. When asked what education was required of the teachers or students, Callie's reply was, "not much. In fact, the children never even knew what grade they were in." Callie's brother, Watson commented, "the only way to get out of school was to move!" The teacher taught the children in small groups according to size, age or ability. Those not being helped at the moment were supposed to be studying; however, every time a horse or a wagon passed by, they all ran to the door to see who it was. Callie says the wagons went by fairly slow, so you had plenty of time to decide if you knew them. In fact, if Grandpa Roberson Terry didn't know a traveler, he got out in the middle of the road to stop them and find out who they were. Travelers were so important in those days, often bringing news the settlement had no other way of hearing; and many homes, such as Roberson Terry's, had an extra room for travelers which was usually called the prea- cher's room. John I. Terry (b. 13 October 1866) married Lanie Tucker in Camp- bell County, Georgia on 24 December 1891. They moved to Commerce, Texas, when Callie was three weeks old (1894) where they lived near John's half-sister, Nancy Antha (Darnell), for about two years. They moved back to Campbell County, Georgia, near Mount Vernon where they lived for the next 24 years. In 1920, after Callie married, John took his wife and remaining children to Oneca, Florida. He invested all he had in land and lost it during the depression of the 1930's. John and Lanie lived in Florida for the rest of their lives, and many of their descendants continue to reside there. John died on the 30th of October, 1945; and his wife died on July 26, 1960. They are both buried in the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, near Fairburn, Georgia.
R. W. TERRY BIBLE
The R. W. Terry Bible was destroyed in the spring of 1979, and the only known copies of the marriage, birth and death pages were those made by my mother, Mrs. L. E. Jones in 1977. I have had copies made and notarized which were placed in the Georgia Archives. The publication date of the Bible is not known, because copies of the title page were not made. - Nancy Jones Cornell.
My great-grandmother Susan D. Terry was born in Niles City, Michigan in 1852. Her Father was Elmer Terry. Sometime in the early 1860's Elmer Terry moved his family to Northern Missouri. I believe his occupation was that of a lay minister. Because of his Baptist and/or Methodist inclinations he was run out of Missouri into Iowa. Susan Deborah Terry married William Wesley Blacketer on Jan. 30, 1877 in Winterset, Iowa. In 1888 she moved with her husband and family to Dakota County, Nebraska. Her sister Electa married a man Mr. Ambler. She later owned a silver mine in Colorado. Her sister Eliza Ann married a man by the name of Jones. Her brother, William E. Terry lived on a farm near Winterset. Susan D. had two nephews Albert and Ben. Terry who lived in or around Dakota City, Nebraska. Susan D. Terry and Wm. W. Blacketer's children were: Lillie, Elizabeth, Albert, Hal, William, Emma, John W., Julia, Ida and Clara.
The following was also sent to me by Mrs. Peters, but she indicated it is not her family. Ref: Biographical History Crawford, Ida and Sac Counties, Iowa. Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Company. 1893. Pages 663-664.
W. E. TERRY
W. E. TERRY, of the firm of W. E. Terry & Co., general merchants at Charter Oak, Iowa, is one of the enterprising young business men of the town, and as such is entitled to some personal mention in the history of Crawford county. W. E. Terry was born in Boonesborough Boone county, Iowa, August 15, 1869, son of Charles and Melissa (Richards) Terry. After the death of his father, his mother married Charles Reiher, and is now a resident of Dunlap, Iowa. Until he was twelve years old Mr. Terry lived in his native town, and from that time until 1887 made his home in Dunlap. In 1887 he went to Omaha, where he was employed as clerk in a grocery establishment one year. The following year he came to Charter Oak and took a position as clerk in the Charter Oak post office, which he held until the spring of 1889, under W. W. Cushman, and five months longer under J. J. McWilliams. In the fall of 1889 he engaged in business with R. W. Bamford, under the firm name of W. E. Terry & Co., this firm being dissolved in January, 1890, by Mr. Terry disposing of his interest. In March, 1890, he formed a partnership with W. W. Cushman, under the style of W. W. Cushman & Co. This relation, however, lasted only a short time, Mr. Cushman retiring October 22, 1890. The firm then became Terry, Rethlefren & Co., and continued as such until June 1, 1892, when the present association was formed, C. M. Leaming, of Mapleton, being the company. This firm carries a complete line of drygoods, groceries, boots and shoes, hats and caps, queensware, etc., the estimated value of their stock being &6,000 and their annual sales amounting to $27,000. Mr. Terry takes an active interest in the welfare of his town and county, and, politically, affiliates with the Democratic party. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., No. 105, and Charter Oak Encmapment, No. 142. He was married June 1, 1891, to Miss Frances Beck, daughter of F. Beck. She was born in Camanche, Iowa, in 1872. They have one son.
I am not a genealogy researcher and have only been working on my family history (along with my 84 year old sister) for several years. But now I am retired, have one husband, 2 sons, 4 grandchildren and 3 and 7/8's great-grandchildren so I thought it time to prepare a legacy for them. Besides its a lot of fun and maybe I can help some one else. Keep up the good work.
J. T. COCHRAN, proprietor of the Crittenden Hotel, Marion, is a native of Livingston County, and a son of Robert and Sarah (Terry) Cochran. Mr. Cochran's ancestors were from North Carolina; his paternal grandfather, Robert Cochran, Sr., dying in that State many years ago. Robert Cochran, Jr., was born in North Carolina. He came to Kentucky in his early manhood and settled near Salem, Livingston County, where he lived for sixty years. Subject's mother, Sarah Cochran, was born in North Carolina; she came to Kentucky, when quite young, with her father, Thomas Terry, and died in Livingston County about 1868, at the age of seventy-one years. Mr. and Mrs. Cochran had one child, J. T., but by previous marriages, the father had other children, two of whom are living, Allen and Henry Cochran. J. T. Cochran was born August 14, 1834. he commenced life for himself as a farmer, and purchased land near Smithland, on which he lived for fifteen years. He disposed of his farm in 1871, and moving to Smith- land, engaged in the mercantile business, which he continued until 1877, when he lost all his possessions by fire. He next engaged in carpentering and blacksmithing, at which trades he worked two years, and then moved to the country, and farmed until 1880. In the latter year he moved to Crittenden Springs, Crittenden County, and engaged in the hotel business at that resort; he ran the hotel for three years when he again lost all his property by fire. He moved to Marion in the fall of 1883, and took charge of the Crittenden House, of which he is still the proprietor. Mr. Cochran was married in Febru- ary, 1857, to Sarah Ross, daughter of James and Becky Ross of Livingston County. To this marriage were born two children, Mary and Sarah (wife of Andrew Dunlapp). Mrs. Cochran died January 8, 1860, and September 19, 1860, Mr. Coch- ran married Nannie Moxley, a daughter of Dr. S. D. and Nannie Moxley, of Franklin County, Ky. The following children were born to the second marriage: Thomas H., Dora, Anna, George, John, William, Hely and Babb (deceased).
