BEACH-TERRY NOTES
Hope you and yours are all settled in at Sapulpa and
that the TFH is back on schedule.
Reason for writing -- a note on your Solomon Beach.
I recently was in public library at Lawrenceburg,
Indiana and was running down their list of rural cemeteries
and burials. This one popped out at me:
Solomon Beach, born 1783 in New Jersey died Aug 21,
1850.
The listing was for Hathaway Cemetery, located on Hogan
Hill Road, Manchester Township, Dearborn County, Indiana.
Don't know anything else, no other Beach burials that I
noticed. Might be a good idea to check the census reports
for the township if you can.
My search didn't produce results -- I had forgotten

that an early courthouse fire at Lawrenceburg had destroyed
records, and that Ohio River floods wiped out bound copies
of the local weekly newspapers, both at Lawrenceburg (county
seat) and neighboring Aurora.
I'm still bogged down in southern New Jersey despite
work by local genealogists and subscriptions to various
publications.

Editor's Note: Several of Dr. Solomon Beach Jr.'s
children were born in Indiana. His father, also named
Solomon Beach, in above letter married in 1810 to Sarah
Terry the daughter of John W. Terry and Pricilla Stokes of
Chester, SC. I wonder why his will was probated in Hamilton
Co. OH in 1850? Another curiosity is there are no Beach
records in Chester Co. SC. Wonder how Sarah and Solomon met?
Is there a connection to New Jersey Terry families?

I started the Terry Family Historian nearly six years
ago and each issue carried Bob's by-line "Covering the
Terry-Tory". Sometimes, members and others would even
confuse me with Bob. I must admit I was not insulted as I
have always been an admirer of his writing style and
approach to genealogy. The editor could always count on
Bob's article and the TFH will certainly not be the same
without his by-line. His stories added a human element to
the often monotonous output of facts and dates from the
editor's computer. -- Many of us never met Bob Terry in
person; however, we are greatful he shared a portion of
himself and his colorful Terry ancestors with us all.

Dear Mr. Terry,
I am sorry to inform you of Bob's death. The enclosed
article was in the March 1987 edition so I am sending you a
copy. It is not dated so I'm not sure whether you already
have or not. Also I'm enclosing the death notice and a photo
if you wish to use it in your publication.
Bob enjoyed 'chasing the ancestors' as he called it but
was perhaps better known for is musical talent on clarinet
and saxophone. He was a newspaperman, with the Cincinnati
Post for 27 years (as state editor), a professor of
Humanities and Business courses at the University of
Cincinnati; music instructor and had a band earlier in his
life and played with Judie Downer until May 30th, 1987 when
they took the summer off. He was certainly well loved and
respected as a man of integrity, charm and wit. If there is
anything I can help you with let me know, however I am not a
researcher or writer.

in-law of Kelly Caliguri Terry. Suddenly, June 11, 1987. Age
73 years. Funeral services at the Neidhard Funeral Home,
7401 Hamilton Ave., Mt. Healthy, Monday June 15 at 11 A.M.
Visitation at the funeral home, Sunday evening from 6 to 8
P.M. If desired memorials may be made to the charity of
one's choice.

In Colonial days, the Episcopal Church in Virginia was
not only a religious body but also was a public, official,
governmental agency. The whole institution was supported by
public taxes sometimes in the form of tobacco in Virginia.
The Church was also active in trying to repress vice,
immorality and acted somewhat like a modern social agency in
helping the poor and needy. The establishment of lines and
boundaries of various land owners was also within the
function of the Church acting through their appointees or
vestries.

found on a microfilm from the LDS library which I had sent
to me from Salt Lake City. I ordered it through
Friendswood, LDS branch Library. The name of the film is
"Halifax Co., Virginia Episcopal Church Vestry Book, Antrim
Parish, Halifax Co. Virginia, 1752-1817." In many places
the film was very hard to read so I don't know if I caught
all the entries.
There is a James Terry mentioned in the 1752 time
period -- several times. James Terry also in 1753, 1754, and
1755.

An article by Flo Smith entitled "TERRY FAMILY",
mentions that Stephen Clements Terry moved into the Godley
community from Hill County (Texas) in January of 1901.
