                       EDITOR'S NOTES
About the time the editor is ready to throw up his
hands and say, "The heck with it!", someone sends me 30
pages of material that has never been published or I receive
a nice note indicating how much help the TFH has been. And I
can generally count on the SAME folks on a consistent basis.
I hope you will drop them a line of encouragement as well.
A special thanks to all who sent me articles for this
issue and especially Jay Terry of Orem, Utah. His enthusiasm
and the Terry records he provided are invaluable. Unlike
North Carolina, Virginia, and several other states, South
Carolina is a hard one to research due to the few recorded
marriages.
The editor had intended to add footnotes with some
primary source documentation to help identify families and
prove relationships in the various SC censuses. However,
space limitations did not permit notations. I am working on
                                      45

notes for ALL of South Carolina and have several pages of
rough notes and about 40 pages typed. These deal mostly with
the following districts: Chester, Fairfield, Greenville,
Laurens, Lancaster and Abbeville.
It should be noted, only Terry's are listed or those
households with a Terry surname were included. I know we
missed some of the Terry females who seemingly disappear
when they marry. Would like to add some of these families to
the census if known.
Since Mrs. James Bushnell's classic Terry Records of
Virginia I have not seen any significant new information
come out of Virginia. Mr. Stephen Terry in 1887 documented
much of the Northern branches of the Terry family and in
passing the South. It was not planned, but much of our
research has been covering the South and in passing the
Northern branches of the Terry family. It is not a plan on
my part to exclude any families; it seems the Southern
families are "turning in more homework".
In some people's view, I have taken a "backward"
approach when I started the TFH. I started at the end and am
working back toward the early beginnings. I think it is
beginning to pay off. We are finding references in other
states to the "states of origin".
For those genealogical "back-benchers". -- It's time to
"move to the front row" and tell the Terry congregation
something about those families "who never are in the TFH".

                  COVERING THE TERRY-TORY
                     by Robert W. Terry
                      4900 Springdale Road
                    Cincinnati OH 45247.
Our editor, Mike, made some excellent points in the first
three pages of the March 1986 TFH, in which he asked for positive
documentation of information or notations such as "probably" or
"believed to be." None of us should object to questions about
material we have sent to him.
Educated guesses are the keys to extending one's family
records, but they must be supplemented by positive proof.
I have been down more blind alleys than a wino with his
newly-acquired jug. Most of them were the result of "educated"
guesses that reflected my wish to make something true without
proof.
                                      46

One item in point: My father told me our Terrys came from
Virginia, which they did. However, Virginia was a stopping place
on their way to central Kentucky. Later searching showed that
most of the first Cincinnati resident's nine children were born
in New Jersey.
Another guess that backfired: I knew from his gravestone
that g-g-grandfather Robert died in 1862 at the age of nearly 91
years. So, when in "Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families" I
found a Robert Terry, born 1770, who married Nancy Smith,
daughter of Peartree and Isabella (Hopkins) Smith, I quickly
decided that this Robert was my ancestor. (Like that name,
Peartree). I was wrong; the Robert who married Peartree Smith's
daughter came west and settled in Henderson County, Ky.,
acquiring 340 acres of land on shore, plus two small islands in
the Ohio River.
What reminded me of my "uneducated" guesses were the
Highland County, Ohio records on Pages 25-27 of the March, 1986
TFH. I have that information plus more, which led to another
blind alley. My g-g-g-grandfather's will, probated in Cincinnati
in 1795, listed his wife Ruth (no maiden name) and with his five
sons and four daughters was a daughter named "Judeh." In those
Highland Co., Ohio records I found that in 1821 Thomas and Sarah
Terry sold some property to one Jeremiah Hendrix and the children
of Thomas and Sarah included Ruth (Terry) Kirby, a Judith (Terry)
Borum, and a Cloe (Terry) Welsh, the latter the wife of a Samuel
Welsh. Since the wife of my g-g-grandfather Robert was Chloe
Worrel Terry, I deduced that these children of Thomas and Sarah
Terry had to be related to my tribe. Sorry to say, I cannot
document it.
Just to show how long those blind alleys can be, I checked
the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy and found that
Thomas Terry's name in the records of New Garden Monthly Meeting
in Guilford County, N. C. in 1791. He was granted a certificate
to South River Monthly Meeting in Virginia in 1796. By 1808,
Thomas and sons David, Jeremiah, Jeduthan (perhaps Jonathan) and
John had been received from South River, VA. to the Fairfield
Monthly Meeting near Leesburg, Ohio. Sarah, wife of Thomas, and
daughter Elizabeth, also were received into Fairfield Monthly
Meeting at Leesburg, also from South River, VA.
In 1823, Thomas and wife Sarah, plus children, were granted
a certificate from Fairfield Monthly Meeting at Leesburg to Alum
Creek Monthly Meeting, at Delaware, Ohio. That's where I left
their records.
There are numerous other personal blind alleys, but I won't
bore you with them.
What editor Mike was trying to point out was for us to avoid
wishful thinking in establishing our direct ancestry.

                                      47

One more personal example and I'll quit:
My mother's maiden name was Ward and I grew up
believing that my direct ancestor on her side was Gen.
Artemus Ward, who was commander-in-chief of the Cincinnati
Army after Bunker Hill. Reference to a Ward family genealogy
showed that my descent is NOT from Gen. Artemus, but from
his brother, Nahum Ward.
Funny thing, though -- I and my family visited Gen.
Artemus' home at Shrewsbury, Mass. a number of years ago and
my children pointed out the resemblance of Artemus' portrait
to my mother's brother, their great-uncle.
I'm taking Mike's advice in future research, using the
"educated" guesses ONLY to lead toward documentation.

           TERRYS OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA
The committee of safety, like any other body politic,
appears shrewdly designed for geographical spread and the
incorporation of all major families. One of the earliest
major families was that of the TERRY's, who are numerous and
respected. Their man for the hour of Revolution in
Pittsylvania Co., VA, was Thomas Terry, son of Joseph,
elected to the committee.
THOMAS, STEPHEN AND JAMES TERRY, were on the QUIT RENT
ROLLS of 1704 in King William County, as early as 1746, the
names of Joseph and  James Terry, appear in the surveyors
records of Halifax Co. In all, they took up some 50,000
acres of land. They established their homes conveniently
near Peytonburg, for they were much involved in Civil and
Business affairs. Joseph's, Mansion house, ELKHORN, still
proud and beautiful, is located on Elkhorn Creek owned by
JACOB T. COLES, III.
NATHANIEL TERRY, their brother, bestrode Halifax County
during the 1750's and 60's, Sheriff, Vestryman, Justice,
Ranger Officer, and builder of Forts. He was also a delegate
to the crucial Convention of May, 1776. One entertaining
sidelight on this gentleman is the Court Session in which he
refused to qualify as Justice in 1757, because, he would not
serve with RICHARD BLAND, and "Never will until RICHARD
BLAND is expunged out of the commission."
Nathaniel Terry, Jr., brought lustre to the family name
during the Revolution. First chairman of the Committee of
Safety, he then became Aide de Camp to General Washington.
Family tradition says that he was captured at Charleston and
imprisoned, but was exchanged in time to be with WASHINGTON
at the Yorktown surrender.
NATHANIEL TERRY'S sword is owned by Mrs. Wallace Moore at
Seaton in Halifax.
In Pittsylvania, Joseph and Joseph Jr., were officers in the
Militia. Thomas was a member of the House of Delegates 1780-
1781.

POINT OF INTEREST to anyone chasing the Elizabeth
(Terry) Ummensetter mentioned on Page 26 of the March [1986)
TFH--She apparently was granted the divorce from Paul B.
Ummensetter.
REASON--In "Marriage Records of Highland County, Ohio"
are entries for TWO marriages of Paul and Elizabeth. The
first was May 23, 1838 with the marriage performed by a
David Reece, J.P.
THE SECOND MARRIAGE is listed for Dec. 26, 1860 with a
Henry Turner performing the ceremony.

FIRST WARRANT ISSUED IN BREATHITT DATED 1838
                   By Louise B. Hatmaker
Once in a while in the news business, you luck onto a
good item of historical significance to your country. That's
the way it happened to us last weekend. Enjoying one small
round of golf at Hazard Golf Club, Claude Tucker - in the
pro shop - said he had a copy of the first warrant ever
served in Breathitt County and it was dated 1838.
We could hardly believe him. But that's just what it
was. Had come to him somehow through Roscoe Davis of Hazard
who is fortunate enough to have the original document, a
real collector's item. We believe that the Burdine Webb
referred to in the lead paragraph is a Letcher Countian and
apparently, the copy of the warrant came through him.
Since the document mentions old family names, we trust
no one will be offended by any reference but will enjoy and
treasure every word since we print it verbatim as it came
back and phraseology was somewhat different in 1839. We
certainly hope that this is an item every Breathitt
Countian, "on the hillside or on the level" will treasure
and want to save. We print same herewith, with thanks to
                                      55

Claude Tucker, and knowing that all of you will enjoy this
written proof that the laws were very strict on Jetts Creek
in 1838. It follows:
               "BLOODY BREATHITT FIRST WARRENT"
Burdine Webb, dean of Home Folks correspondents in the
Blue Grass State, says the first warrant ever issued in
"Bloody Breathitt County", Kentucky, came to his attention
recently. Burdine says the warrant was written in 1838, and
here it is, word for word and letter for letter.
"I, Jackson Terry, hi official magistrate, squire and
justice of the peace, do hereby issue the following rit
against Henderson Harrison, charging him with assalt and
battery and brech of the pese on his brotherin Law, Tom Fox
by name.
"This warrant cuses him of kicking bittin and throin
rocks and doing everything that was mean and contrary to law
in the State of Jetts Creek aforesaid.
"This warrant orthorizes the hi constable, Miles Terry
by name, to go forthwith and forthcomin and arest the sed
Henderson Harris and bring him to bee delt according to the
law of Jetts Creek aforesaid.
"This warrant orthises the hi constable to take him on
the hillside as well as in the livel to take him where he
ain't as well as wher he is and bring him to me to be delt
with according to the laws of Jetts Creek aforesaid.
     "Jiniary the 2, 1838.
     "(Signed) Jackson Terry.

pese of Jetts Creek aforesaid"

NOTES ON SOUTH CAROLINA DISTRICT CHANGES
1.   The first three districts of 1683 were all discontinued the present
     Berkely is not the original.
2.   In 1790 the capital of the State was moved from Charleston to
     Columbia.
3.   In 1798 Washington was discontinued as a district name as was Camden.
(From records, it appears Camden was used by some recorders for years
     after the change. JT.)
4.   In 1802 Horry and Williamsburg Districts were formed from parts of
     Georgetown District.
5.   In 1804, Lexington District was formed from Orangeburg District.
6.   In 1826, Pendleton District was changed to Pickens and Anderson
Districts. The name Pendleton District was discontinued.
7.   In 1855, Clarendon District was formed from part of Sumter District.
8.   The 1868 Constitution changed 30 "districts" to counties. Even after
1868, some recorders continued to use "district" as they felt it had been
     a "yankee" imposition.
