IOWA TERRY FAMILIES IN THE 1850 CENSUS
Compiled by Mrs. Donald L. Reid 13863 Kinbrook St., Sylma CA 91342
After I found the article in the March 1984 TFH edi- tion, I was sure I would find a young boy named Charles Terry in one of the families in the 1850 census for Iowa, but no such luck. Then since Charles' wife had remarried, I wrote to the State of Iowa to get her death certificate under the newer married name, but they had no record of her death. I'm still not able to find out anything about Charles and Melissa (Richards) Terry.
I did copy the information on the Terry families in the 1850 census for Iowa:

I hope this information will be of help to some of your readers. Since Charles' wife was born in OH, my current thought is that he may have lived in OH in 1850. When I looked in the 1850 census index for OH and saw the number of Terrys, I gave up the idea of looking at all of them as I did for IA. Any ideas where I might look now?--Mrs. Donald L. Reid. * * * * *

PHYSICIAN WHO WARNED CIGARETTES ARE DANGEROUS DIES OF HEART FAILURE
Knight-Ridder
PHILADELPHIA -- Dr. Luther L. Terry, the U.S. Surgeon general who in 1964 issued the report declaring cigarette smoking a health danger, has died, apparently of heart failure.
Terry, 73, died Friday at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, where he had lived since retiring from govern- ment service in 1965.
PAGE (49)
Appointed surgeon general in 1961 by then-President Kennedy after a 23-year career in public health, Terry once described the report as "probably having the greatest impact of any government report ever issued."
The report's conclusion that there is a relationship between cigarette smoking and such diseases as lung cancer brought a strong reaction from the tobacco industry, but Terry steadfastly held to the findings, which eventually led to the now well-known warning that "cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health," written on every pack of cigar- ettes sold in the country.
As surgeon general, Terry became the staunchest defender of the report and withstood pressure from the tobacco industry, which tried to refute its conclusions. He responded by declaring that the industry was trying to cloud the issue with a "smoke screen" of lies.
The report grew out of a 1962 study by a committee appointed by Terry to investigate growing evidence that seemed to link cigarette smoking to health problems. Terry, who had been a cigarette smoker for 20 years, had quit about a year before the study began.
"I quit for two reasons," he said in an interview in 1979. "One was that there was increasing evidence that it was harmful. The other was that it was ludicrous for the surgeon general to smoke."
Although the report was often referred to as the "Terry report," he was quick to share credit for its find- ings with the committee. In the 1979 interview, he said, "I released it (the report), endorsed it and took responsi- bility for it, but I didn't prepare it. A committee I appointed prepared it."
Born in Red Level, Ala., Terry earned his medical degree in 1920 from Tulane University in New Orleans and practiced for a time in Cleveland before entering the public-health field and beginning a teaching career.
A heart specialist, he maintained a keen interest in research.
Terry, formerly a member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins University, became vice president for medical af- fairs at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia after stepping down as surgeon general.
In 1972, he took a leave of absence from the university to become a principal consultant with University Associates Inc., a non-profit consulting firm based in Washington that works with colleges, research institutes and government
PAGE (50)
agencies.
As unpaid director of medical affairs for Medic Alert Foundation International, he worked to publicize the need for people with medical problems to wear bracelets that explain those problems.
Terry himself wore a bracelet stamped with the words "mild hypertension; taking medication."
He is survived by his wife, Janet Reynolds Terry; two sons, Michael and Luther Jr.; a daughter, Janet Terry Kollock; and three grandchildren.

A similar but shorter version of the obituary appeared in the Monday Evening, April 1, 1965 Fort Worth Star- Tele- gram and several newspapers nationwide.
The following excerpts from a letter was submitted by member Lois T. Augustson, 5904 Wonder Drive, Ft. Worth TX 76133.
THE SURGEON GENERAL OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE
WASHINGTON
June 29, 1965
Dear Mrs. Augustson:
I wish to acknowledge your letter of June 13 with regards to the genealogy of the Terry family.
I am not sure of the answers to your questions and I am consequently referring your letter to my uncle, Mr. W. J. Terry, 31 Lancaster Road, Mobile Alabama 36608. I have asked him to respond to you directly.
Sincerely,
Luther L. Terry
Surgeon General
* * * *
In your December 1984 issue on page 200 there was a little article on Dr. Luther L. Terry, former Surgeon General of the U. S. I am enclosing a clipping from our paper saying that he had died. It didn't say what day - so I am not sure if it was the 1st of April. I had written to him
PAGE (51)
at one time for some information and he referred me to an uncle in Mobile, AL. I wrote to the uncle and aunt for some time and also to another uncle (Evan P. Terry in Moundville, AL) but they have all since died I believe. The two uncles were cousins to my father. In fact, we stopped by for a very short visit with Evan P. Terry and also stopped at the Liberty Methodist Church and Cemetery. That may not be the proper name.... It is a small frame church and cemetery out by itself and I think half the people there were related to me but didn't have but a couple of minutes to look. My great grandfather is buried there - I hope to go back some day.
I was going to send you copies of the wills of Obediah Clement and Zepheniah Clement if you don't have them. The copies came out so poor as the original was poor - so will do that later as I want to see if I can't get better copies. They were relatives [of] Susanna or Susannah Clement, wife of James Terry of Edgefield County, SC in my line.
I am interested in what your line is in the Terry family. Perhaps it has been in the TFH but if so I have missed it....
I know you have a million letters so will close for now.
Most Sincerely,
Lois Terry Augustson (Mrs. A. W.) 031284 (Member #30)
[Editor's note: I descend from Stephen Terry d. 1769 Craven Co. SC (In what is now Chester Co. SC). Members of my Terry branch then removed to DeKalb Co. GA, Union Co. AR and Lamar Co. TX. My surnames of interest are STOKES, HILL, MCCLURE, GILL, HEFFNER, GASTON, BOTTOMS, CUNNINGHAM.]

COVERING THE TERRY-TORY
By Robert W. Terry 4900 Springdale Rd., Cincinnati OH 45247
I guess you could call this a "Dear John" letter, not the usual variety involving shattered romance, but a letter to my g/g/g/ grandfather, John Terry. My records show him in Cincinnati as early as 1790, less than two years after the founding and settlement of Losantiville, later changed to Cincinnati.
Dear John:
PAGE (52)
Just thought I'd let you know how much trouble I have had in tracing my ancestry back to you and your wife, Ruth, and my wish that you were around so that I could definitely learn about your ancestors and the overseas country of their origin.
You wouldn't believe Losantiville/Cincinnati today. Under the latter name, it is a big city with many tall buildings, extensive industry and business. At one time, Cincinnati was nicknamed "Porkopolis" because of the many meat-packing industries.
I'll skip the history and get to the point of the letter, relating my St. Patrick's Day tour of downtown Cincinnati, riding on a truck decorated for the holiday. What's a truck? It's a self-propelled vehicle, but I'll explain that some other time.
I'm retired from a career as a newspaper editor and a second job as a teacher at the college level. Now I follow my first love as a performing musician and allowed myself to be talked into making music on the St. Patrick's Day float. Somewhere, one of your descendants said the Terrys came from Ireland.
We boarded our truck on Second Street, headed east toward Broadway and the former location of Fort Washington in your day. It was windy and it snowed, but I wore garments that were warmer, probably, than any you had.
When the truck moved out, I was able to brace myself, grateful for more than two years on the bridge of a ship in a war you never heard of or anticipated.
Looking up Walnut Street, I could see Lot 109 that you paid 25 shillings for in 1789 or 1790; Lot 116 that you won in May, 1789 in a lottery conducted by the owners, located on Main Street, and lot 95 on Main, that cost you 25 shil- lings.
Also on Walnut, I could see Lot 162 that your son, Robert, bought, I suspect, with your money, since he was only 18 or 19 years old at the time. He is my great-great- grandfather.
Our parade moved from Second Street to Broadway, and up the latter to Fifth Street. I was busy making music with icy fingers and silently cursing the parade sponsors who prohi- bit any spirits in parade vehicles. But, not a bad idea, for you know the reputation of the Irish, and musicians.
At Fifth and Main, I could look up to the lot that your son, Enos, purchased for 80 shillings, an unheard of price
PAGE (53)
in those days. I'd boggle your mind if I told you what that lot would sell for today.
At Fifth and Race, I could look toward Fourth Street and see Lot 240, which your widow, Ruth, bought after your demise.
It was very cold on Fifth Street; the wind whistled between the tall buildings along our route. However, I had a warm feeling that I was traveling the perimeter of lands owned by my ancestors when Indian attack was the foremost danger.
The parade disbanded near Second Street and I took one more look at downtown Cincinnati and your holdings before my wife, Joan, and I set out to find some of that Irish "medicine" for chills. My chops were sore from playing "The Irish Washerwoman" through the city; you probably heard that tune before.
I'm not upset that you couldn't realize in 1789 and 1790 that those downtown Cincinnati lots you held would today make their owners millionaires. I do occasionally wonder why you and your offspring, and theirs, usually picked the most isolated and least fertile farm land that you could find.
But, I'm forever grateful to you for whatever genes were passed down through the generations from you to me, that are reflected in my health and whatever talents I have. If my search for your ancestors reveals that they were Irish, I'll drink a toast to you.
And that's no "blarney."
Bob Terry

CONSUMER ALERT
A Service of the office of the Attorney General Consu- mer Protection Division. Hotline: 1-800-482-8982
Attorney General Steve Clark has asked Arkansans to be cautious when ordering genealogical books from unknown out- of-state publishing companies.
Have you ever wondered about your family's history? Do you have an updated record of your family tree? Would you be interested in a complete listing of the members of your family? According to the attorney general, these sales pitches are very successful in selling printed books of family names.
"Our people have received post cards stating that a new edition of their family tree would be published soon. For a given amount of money an early edition would be reserved for them," Clark said.
"In most of the cases the consumers were extremely disappointed when the books finally arrived. The major por- tion of the books was devoted to a detailed history of genealogy. Several sections were printed on the history of coats of arms and other symbols used throughout history to denote family ranks and distinction. The actual listing of names was very similar to a computer printing of names and addresses of various persons with the same last name. There was no guarantee that any of the persons were related or
PAGE (56)
that the information was genealogically correct," he added.
The Consumer Protection Division in the Attorney General's Office has found that there are several companies offering this service; however, very few persons have noti- fied the office that they were completely pleased with the books.
Persons interested in a true record of their family should be certain that the records are carefully researched and have been traced on the correct family. This type of service can be obtained from legitimate sources, but it may involve some time for preparation as well as a large sum of money for information.
Information has been received that these books have been offered for sale throughout the state by direct mail solicitations, newspaper articles, classified ads, and ad- vertising in nationally published magazines. The price varies for each of the publications, but the cost is usually quoted at $40 to $50 as an advance payment. Some of these books are shipped COD, which would prevent an inspection of the materials before payment is made.
"It is not likely that a complete family history could have been compiled, researched, and printed before any con- tact was made with family members. Offers for publications such as this regardless of the source of solicitation, should be ignored," Clark said.
The quality of the books is another point of complaint which has been brought to the attention of the Consumer Protection Division. The ads often state that the book is bound grained leather with gold imprinted lettering. This is an oversimplification of the actual product. The books may be leather in appearance but the covering is extremely thin and may not be of quality leather at all. The gold print is of a poor commercial grade and is not an expensive hand printed job.
"Clark said, "My advice would be to check with the local historical or genealogical society, the public library and other interested organizations before paying for a book- let from some unknown publishing company. I would also ask to see a copy of any publication before paying for it. This is the only way to be certain that it contains correct and useful information."
Persons who have questions regarding these solicita- tions for family tree publications should contact the Consu- mer Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office in the Justice Building, Little Rock AR 72201. The office can be reached toll free at 1-800-482-8982. TTY service is available for use by the deaf and hearing impaired.

BEWARE OF BEATRICE
On the back cover of the most recent issue of the newsletter from Wisconsin State Genealogical Society, there appears a copy of a news article concerning the trial of Beatrice Schneider (also known as Beatrice Bayley). Mrs. Schneider, a 78 year old woman, had been charged with con- tempt of court stemming from a 1980 case. The article was dated 11 January 1985, and we do not know the outcome of the trial, but the postcards from Beatrice Bayley continue to be received. Source: Arkansas Genealogical Society, Inc. News- letter #5, April 1985.
[Editor's note: Mrs. Bailey promises a Terry or any surname family history which is characteristic of that mentioned in Mr. Clark's article. If you have a similar agency in your state, report this to them. I have received her postcards as well and put it in file 13 because I had known of her for several years. This kind of publication makes it hard for an honest mail-order publication to function-- which I think we are.]
