EDITOR'S NOTES
There is a real dilemma in publishing this first issue of the TFH. What to do? Most of my records come from states in the Southern area geographically and specifically VA,NC,SC,AR and TX. However, I realize we must include a broad spectrum of data from different areas to attract new subscribers. It was not my intention to exclude any area or branch of Terrys and should note that this first issue should be viewed as a guide to a format rather than the norm. If you have any suggestions or information we could use either.
It is believed that the TFH should be as scholarly as possible (docu- mented) but also "folksy" to give a personal flavor. I included several items from my own family to give you an idea of what we might use. Please send obituaries or other newspaper articles of those born before 1900.
I have been impressed by Terry Records of Virginia due to its being organized by Counties and data from each county appears together. As you can see, I like to publish obituaries, cemetery records, military records and other memorabilia together. It seems to make more sense to me.
There is a noted lack of census information and I did not publish very many marriage record lists outside of North Carolina. I will however in the future do this if we can identify a significant number of parents of brides and grooms in a county listing. If anyone can do this in a given county, I would prefer to publish this material first.
A number of persons with expertise outside of the Southern geographic area have promised data and others have volunteered to be contributing reporters.--Don't give up -- I hope to improve as we go along.
The picture on the front of the TFH is a copy of a tintype from Janet Elliott Cain and is of Stephen Terry 1788-1866 and third wife Mary A. Lewis. It costs $15.00 extra for any page which includes pictures. I paid for this personally. I will have to ask the same for anyone sub- mitting pictures. Hopefully, we can do away with the charge for queries, but at present, the membership is not enough to pay for more than the first issue. It costs exactly $2.50 to publish and mail the TFH. Every- thing generated by the TFH will go into making it bigger and better.
Thank you for your support. Please tell others of our budding publi- cation.

TERRY BOOKS
Note: I will list books that contain a substantial amount of Terry family information Some are out of print but are quoted quite often. I have found these to be most useful-particularly trying to find out and identify who the Terry families were in a certain location.
Sallye Pleasant Williams. First Families and Town Histories of Hinds County (MS) Volume 2 (Jackson, MS: Mrs. John C. "Sallye" Williams, Nov- ember 1978) pp. 230-284. Pages cited are a section on Southern Terry families. Mrs. John C. Williams, 2232 Breckinridge Dr., Jackson, MS 29204. The collateral family information is very good and helped me. It has some documentation but it is sometimes hard to figure out what goes with which Terry. She notes that it is presently out of print but loaned me a copy to look at.
Janet Elliott Cain. Descendants of George Elliott Pioneer Settler of Atlanta: Including, Histories Background & Related Terry Family (5977 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX : Janet Elliott Cain, 1980), pp.92- 114. Pages cited are a section on Terrys. It deals with descendants of Major Stephen Terry. It has a good deal of family sheet information but little documentation. The book is very helpful for finding docu- mentation for it lists locations and time frames. It does have several pictures and maps, one of which is Major Stephen Terry and 3rd wife Mary A. Lewis. It is priced at 15.00 and may be ordered from Janet at the above noted address.
Edna Harris Bushnell. Terry Records of Virginia (Owensboro, KY; McDowell Publications, 1980) In my opinion, this is probably the "Terry Bible" for Virginia researchers. It has excellent documentation but does not give relationships all of the time. It was much needed to help unscramble Terry research which, as you know, is not always correct. It my be ordered from Mrs. Bushnell at 2919 Fairway Dr., Birmingham AL 35213 and is priced $25.00. I guarantee it will save you countless hours of research and money. In a recent letter to me she noted that her Terry Records for MO,SC,AL,MS,TN and KY may be ready by July, 1982.-- I am sure there will be a line.
Stephen Terry. Notes of Terry Families 1887. Hartford, CT. This early work on both Northern and Southern Terrys is quoted in almost every Terry work I have seen. I have, regretfully, only seen that portion in Mrs. Bushnell's book but am advised it is in most large libraries It is a good place to start research.
If there are other Terry books, or books that have significant Terry information please let me know.

On 6 Oct 1981, I received a nice letter from Mrs. Lina Terry McIlwain 119 Oak Dr., Brandon, MS 3902. She Indicated at that time that there were two Terry Coats of Arms. The one she has is the same as the John Terry early of Virginia. However, I have seen other Terry Coats of Arms that were not the same. Can someone clear this up? Possibly everyone is correct and maybe different Terry families had different Coats of Arms. I checked and Bolton, Charles Knowles Bolton`s American Armory. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969 lists one Terry Goat of Arms. (Lists coats of arms of American families.) Three are listed in Burke, Sir Bernard. The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales London: 1884. Reprint Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969. (The main reference source for English coat of arms.)
1 . Arms: Argent, a cross between four martlets gules . Crest: A demi-lion proper holding a fleur-de-lis gules. (Arms: On a silver field, a cross between four red birds. Crest: The top half of a lion in its natural color holding a red fleur-de-lis.) Note: This appears in Descendants of George Elliott Pioneer Settler of Atlanta by Janet Elliott Cain.
2. Arms: Ermine on a pile gules a leopard's head Jessant de lis or. Crest: A four tongued griffin's head erased and gorged. (Arms: On a ermine spotted shield a red triange containing a gold leopard's head with a fleur-de-lis behind it. Crest: A four-tongued fictitious creature's head torn from the body and with a crown around the neck, Note: This is the Arms that Mrs. McIlwain indicates is the Arms for Virginia Terrys.
3. Arms: Azure, a fess argent between three crosses crosslets or, on a chief of the last a demi-lion rampant gules. Crest: A demi-lion rampant gules holding between the paws a shield or. (Arms: On a blue field a silver bar between three gold crosses above which is a gold bar with a red half-lion. Crest: The top half of a red lion holding a gold shield.)
4. Same arms as above. Crest: A demi-lion rampant gules holding between the paws a shield with the representation of a human face thereon azure garnished and rimmed or. (Crest: The top half of a red lion holding a shield with a blue human face ornamented and rimmed in gold.)
From Sallye Pleasant Williams, 2232 Breckinridge Road, Jackson,MS 39204, in a letter dated 20 Feb 1982. She noted that a historical marker for the town of Terry, MS was dedicated last summer honoring William David Terry, who donated the land for the railroad station/depot, the school, four churches and the cemetery. W. D. Terry was the son of Joseph Minter Terry and wife Lydia Mims and grandson of William S. Terry and wife Sally Minter of Edgefield, SC. The town was named for him and Mrs. Williams is a descendant of this family.
From First Families and Town Histories p. 233. Terryville, Texas took its name from James Doss Terry b. 1 Nov 1835 TN m. 11 Apr 1859 in Victoria, TX Kate Ferber,(dau of John Ferber) b. 28 Nay 1842, Nassau, Ger. He was the son of Thomas Jefferson and m (1) Maria Doss of Smith Co., TN.

Nathaniel Terry (1768-1844): Representative from Connecticut. Nathaniel Terry was born in Enfield, Connecticut, and attended college at Yale, where he studied law. He established his practice in Hartford, Connecticut. From 1807 to 1809 Terry served as judge of Hartford County Court. He was elected to Congress in 1816 and served one term. Terry later became president of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company, president of the Hartford Bank, and mayor of Hartford.
Silas Wright Terry (1842-1911): naval officer. Born in Trigg County, Kentucky, Silas entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1861. Many of the midshipmen at the Academy at that time were resigning to take sides with the seceding states, but Terry declared that he would be loyal and true to the Union, despite strong pressures to the contrary. He served with distinction in the Civil War, on the staff of Admiral Porter. Terry was promoted to commander in 1877, and rear-admiral in 1900. His naval career is interesting in the fact that it spanned from the days of sailing vessels to the time of more modem battleships, including command of the battleship Iowa.
By the time of the first census in America in 1790, many Terry families had settled in this country. The average Terry household had 5.5 members and census records indicate that there were more Terry heads-of-households living in Virginia, Connecticut, and New York than in any other part of America. Today there are approximately 79,000 adult Americans named Terry.

On 27 Sep 1980 I received a letter from George H. Moore of Chester Co., SC who noted that John W. Terry (1752-1834) was buried in a cemetery on a farm owned by him. He was kind enough to take a Polaroid picture and also copied the epitaph. The pictures are not re-printable as they are unclear, but the map to the cemetery and what follows is interesting. I had not seen it published anywhere else. It reads as follows:

IN THE 83RD YEAR OF HIS LIFE

Obituary for Hugh McClure Terry. Paris (TX) Morning News, Wednesday, January 8, 1919.
"An Old Resident Dies at His Son's Home"
On account of the bad weather keeping people at home as a result of which the happenings in the different communities was tardy in being reported. The News did not learn until yesterday of the death of Rev. H. M. Terry one of the oldest citizens of the east part of Lamar county, which occurred last Thursday at Blossom at the home of his son, Sam Terry, with whom he was living. Although he was about eighty-five years of age and was in feeble health his death was principally due to a fall which he received last summer in which he had a leg broken. He had never recovered from the effects of the fall.
The deceased located in the Milton community when he moved to Lamar county and he continued to reside there until about three years ago when he moved to Blossom to make his home with his son, S. L. Terry. He was an ordained Minister of the Baptist church and served one term as county commissioner. He was married twice and is survived by his second wife and several children. The children of the first wife are Geo. W. Terry of Milton, Charley Terry of New Mexico, J. C. Terry of Plainview, who is sheriff of Hale county, Sam Terry, with whom he was making his home, and Mrs. John Marcum of Blossom. The chil- dren by his second wife are Hugh and Major Terry and Mrs. Raymond Hutchison.
The remains were taken to the Minter cemetery for burial and the funeral was conducted by Rev. Harry M. Thompson pastor, of the Methodist Protestant church of that place.
Mrs. Irene (Terry) Gray Harvey and Mrs. Agnes (Steel) Terry King both advised me that there was a lot of snow on the ground and Hugh McClure was carried on the under carriage of wagon to the cemetery. Uncle Sam, she said, had to walk along and push the mud from the spokes. He came back to the George W. Terry house and was very cold. Sam and George W. Terry were the only ones who accompanied him to the grave yard. I have searched in vain for his plot, it is unmarked and the grounds-keeper had no record of the plot. Minter Cem. is one of the oldest in Lamar Co., TX.

"Obituary for Martha Rourk Jeffus Terry" From: Paris Morning News, Tuesday, February 11, 1919.
"Aged Wife Follows Husband to Grave"
Mrs. Martha Terry, the widow of Rev. H. M. Terry, an old resident of the county, died last Saturday evening at 5 o`clock at the home home of her daughter, Mrs. Raymond Hutchison, near Warlick Park. Her death was partly due to old age and to Brights disease, but it was hastened by a fall which she received nearly two weeks ago. While walking across the floor she was tripped and had a hip broken. Her husband, whom died a month ago, fell and broke his hip last August, which was said to have been the cause of his death, he never having recovered from the injury.
Mrs. Terry would have been seventy-eight years old on last Sunday, the day after her death. She leaves two sons and two daughters, Ed Terry of Milton, Hugh Terry of Plainview, Mrs. John Marcum of Blossom and Mrs. Raymond Hutchison of Paris. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Yarborough of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Hogue of Grapevine and Mrs. Keener of Milton. The latter is confined to bed from falling and breaking a hip three months ago. She also leaves several step-children.
The remains were taken to Blossom Sunday afternoon, where the funeral was held at 4 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S.S.Crain.
I thought it odd that the obit for Hugh McClure Terry did not mention either of his wives by name also step-children were not mentioned. A picture of Hugh McClure and Martha Terry indicates they were not close. I believe and this is born out by an interview with Agnes (Steel) Terry King who advised, "Hugh never loved Martha and always loved Mary(Bennett)." There may be some truth in this.
"Obituary for George W. Terry"
From: Paris News Service clipping n.d. 1959.
The funeral of George William Terry, 93, of Milton community, veteran Lamar County Commissioner and farmer, was set Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Milton Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Hoover, Baptist pastor.
Grant Funeral Home here had charge of burial in Milton Cemetery, pall- bearers being Tully Temple, Frank Lee, M. Harvey, Jack Short, Berney Scott and James Rherdasil.
Mr. Terry leaves a son, Clark Terry, and a daughter, Mrs. Dee Harvey, both of Rt. 1, Pattonville, seven grandchildren and five great-grand- children.
Born near El Dorado, Ark. August 13, 1866, Mr. Terry was a son of the late Hugh Mack Terry, a Confederate veteran, and the former Miss Martha Bennett.
Page 19
Obit of Geo. W. Terry cont
His farm home had been that of three relatives, all of whom had been county commissioners before him, his father, an uncle, S.L. Bennett, and J. W. Bennett. George Terry first served as a commissioner for Precinct 1 by appointment in 1920, to succeed J. F. Wharton who had died. Subsequently, he served a number of terms in that office.
He married Miss Elsie Steel, Sept. 12, 1898, at Milton, her death occurring about five years ago.
Mr. Terry died in a Paris hospital Wednesday after a 10 - day illness.
George W. Terry was well-liked and well remembered. On several occasions I have visited Lamar Co. and the mention of my Great-Grandfather`s name has allowed me to get information I would not have received so willingly. My Aunts, Mrs. Irene Harvey and Agness King have also been very helpful and very agile in remembering for me. Both very kind and warm "Southern Ladies".
This article was given to me and probably came from Paris paper ca 1956.
Thanks again: Mrs. Agnes (Steel) Terry King.
"Geo. W. Terry, 90 Years Old Aug. 13"
George W. Terry, former Lamar County commissioner of Precinct 1, observed his 90th birthday Monday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. D. H. Harvey, near Milton. Mr. Terry in good health, went about his activities without any fan- fare on the occasion. A politician, he spent most of the day watching TV programs of the National Democratic Convention in Chicago.
To note the date, Mrs. Harvey baked his favorite cake, a pound cake and decorated it with one lone candle, along with fried chicken and other trimmings.
George William Terry, son of a Baptist minister, Rev. H.M. and Mary (Bennett) Terry, was born Aug. 13, 1866 at El Dorado, Ark. He moved, at the age of five with his parents to Milton community and settled on a farm where he lived until the death of his wife, the former Elsie Steel, in 1954. He and his late wife were married in 1897. Mr. Terry has two Sons and a daughter, now living. They are Clark Terry and Mrs. Harvey of Milton, and Frank Terry of Orange Grove, Calif. There are six grandchil- dren. Another son, Oral Terry died in 1954.
Beginning in 1920, Mr. Terry served five elective and two appointive terms as Lamar County commissioner of Precinct 1, for a total of 13 years. During the various periods he held this office, many miles of hard surface roads were built in the county, and he was instrumental in securing many thoroughfares now extending across Precinct l.
Terry, who still drives his 1936 model car, is possibly the oldest licensed driver in Texas. He has been driving a car for 40 years with- out serious accident.

"We keep forgetting all of those who lived before us. We keep for- getting those who lived, and worked, and prayed, and sang, and built long before we were born.
We commit the sin of assuming that everything begins with us. We drink from wells that we did not find. We eat food from farm lands we did not develop. We worship in churches we did not organize or build. We enjoy freedoms we have not earned.
We should be grateful for our heritage, and turn our minds in grate- ful appreciation to those who lived in another day, and under vastly dif- erent circumstances, so that we can live a better life today."

COVERING THE TERRY-TORY
By Robert W. Terry 4900 Springdale Road Cincinnati, Ohio 45239
(Note: I wrote a column under the above heading for many years dur- ing my career with the Cincinnati Post and other newspapers and thought it applicable for a publication attempting to aid researchers of the Terry family.)
I'm looking for THE John.
Object of my search is the eastern origin of g-g-g-grandfather John Terry and the country from which he emigrated to the American colonies. Research has resulted In ten looseleaf Research full of Terrys and families into which they married.
Terry was a common surname in the colonies, occasionally spelled dif- ferently -- Terree, Tiry, Tyree, Tony, Tarry, Torrey are some of the variations.
One published list contained the marriage license for my g-g-grand- father Robert, but listed his surname as "Levy". For a while I thought I might be of Jewish descent.
My particular line of Terrys cane from New Jersey via western Virginia, western North Carolina and central. Kentucky to Cincinnati. They were In Cincinnati as early as May 1789, when g-g-g-grandfather John received a gift lot and bought other lots in the village of Losantiville. Those lots today are part of downtown Cincinnati.
Ancestor John Terry is a difficult man to trace. In the belief that some of you are tracing a John Terry of colonial, times, let me list some of the John Terrys I have found, and tell you where I found them.
1) John Terry, 1760-1835, a seaman aboard the "Rolla", under Capt. Peter Landais. Captured, later served on "Alliance" in fleet commanded by John Paul Jones in the "Bon Homme Richard". This John Terry died at Whitefield, Maine. (Source: Notes of the Terry Family in the U. S.)
2) John Terry, first bailiff of Frederica, Georgia, 1742. Accused of raping a servant girl. (Sources: Immigrants from Great Bri- tain to the Georgia colony and The Journal of William Stephens, 1743-45.)
3) John Terry, 1726-?, son of Ebenezer and Mary (Helms) Terry, of Enfield, Conn. (Source: Notes of the Terry Family in the U. S.)
4) John Terry, private in 1778 volunteer company of Pittsburgh, Pa. under Gen. (Edward) Hand. (Source: Frontier Defense of the Upper Ohio, by Thwaites.)
5) John Terry, surveyor of tract 24 miles southwest of St. Louis, Mo. in 1804. (source: Missouri Land Claims.)
6) John Terrie, 1771 witness to will of William Dangerfield in Spotsylvania Go., Va. (Source: Spotsylvania County Records,)

I received the following information from Mrs. R. P. Elliott, 301 Pine St., Clayton, NM 88415. She is a desc. of William Terry b. ca 1724 d. 1803 Botetourt Co. VA., These are excerpts from data taken from Genealogy of the Family of Terry, compiled by Wm. T. Hocken, Jan l, 1952.
Name of Terry is said to have been derived from Thierry, nickname for the baptismal name of Theodoric of Tedric. Ancient records show it as: Theirry, Thierre, Tirry, Terri, Tyrry, Terre, Terye, Terrey,Terry, etc. p. 4
Families of this name, possibly of Norman origin, were found in early dates in the countries of Cumberland York, Huntington, London, Bucking- ham Oxford, Somerset and Chester in England, as well as in Cork, Ireland., Were for the most part, landed gentry and yeomanry of Great Britain., p. 4
Among early records of the name in England are those of David Filius Tirry of Cumberland County, ca: 1273. Richard Terry of Huntingtonshire and Geoffrey Terri of Oxfordshire, ca. 1273. Johannes Tyrry of York- shire in 1379 , Petrus Terre of the late 14th Century, John Terri of London in 1524, and brothers John, James and Thomas Terrey or Terry of Barnet near London. John is said to have married the widow Eli- zabeth (nee Gale) Pierepont, and had at least 3 sons, William, Ste- phen and John. The last two are believed to have emigrated to America ca. 1630, or shortly after, p. 4
William Terry of Cork, Ireland in early 17th Century, father of Igna- tious, who had a son named William, who was the father of Thn Ramon Terry, officer for the King of Spain in the 18th Century., p. 4
Probably first name in America were Stephen and John Terry (brothers mentioned above) . Stephen supposed to have come to Dorchester, Mass. in 1630 and moved to Windsor, Conn. ca. 1637. Name of his wife is not certain. Had issue Mary, John, Elizabeth and Abigail. pp. 4-5
John, brother of above, supposed to have lived in Windsor, Conn., but not until Ca., 1635. He is said to have married twice and had several children. He probably returned to England, for few records are to be found here. pp., 4-5
John, son of Stephen, married probably in 1662 to Elizabeth Wadsworth and had issue: Elizabeth, Stephen, Sarah, John, Rebecca (died young), Mary, Solomon, and Rebecca. p., 5
In 1635 , three brothers , Thomas , Robert and Richard Terry (ancestry unknown) came to New England from London and settled at Southold on Long Island. Very little known about these 3 brothers, but Richard is claimed to have issue by a wife named Abigail: Abigail, Gershom, Nathaniel, Sarah, Richard, John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary and Bethia. Eldest son Richard, Gershom, married Deborah Wells and had among others, a son Gershom. p. 5
Another early emigrant to America was Samuel Terry, said to have come Barnet, near London England in 1650, and is said by some authorities to have been the son of William, (Elder brother of John and Stephen), but this is not proved. Samuel lived in Springfield, Mass., and is said to have married Anna Lobdell ca., 1660., Children were: Samuel, Ephraim, (died young), Thomas, Mary, Rebecca (died young), Elizabeth and Ann. May have married again, Mary Scott, in 1690, but no issue by her, p. 5
Page 38
Notes from Wm. T. Hocken cont.
Samuel, Eldest son of above, lived in Enfield Conn. Married Hannah Morgan in 1682., Issues: Hannah, Samuel, Rebecca, Ebenezer, and Twins who died young. About 1698 he is said to have married again the widow Martha Crane and had issue , Benjamin, Ephraim, Jacob, Martha Jonathan and Isaac. pp. 5-6.,
Thomas, second son of Samuel, married 1687 to Ann Cooley and had issue, Thomas (died young) , Mary, Anna, Bethis, Thomas, Rebecca and Samuel. Second wife, widow Mary Meacham -- no issue. (married 1722). Third wife widow Hannah Chapin, married 1735., No issue. p. 6
Ephraim, third son of Samuel, married in 1695 to Hannah Eggleston, and lived at Enfield. Later at Lebanon Conn., Father of Hannah, Mary, Ephraim, Esther, Samuel, Ann, John and an infant who died early. p. 6
Terrys who fought as officers in Revolutionary War: Lt. William of VA; Capt. Nathaniel of Va.; Major Jeremiah of So., Car. p. 6
