COVERING THE TERRY-TORY

Isn't it rather odd that occasional current events renew one's interest
in the family tree and send one back to whatever records are available, to
continue or expand the search?
A personal case in point --a recent series on public television depicted
the six wives of King Henry VIII of England and my wife and I watched and
discussed each program. I found myself quite foggy about details once firmly
established in my mind, vowing to brush up on the subject.
So, at a nearby bookstore that permits trading of your used paperbacks
for others previously traded, I found a paperback:
"A Crown for Elizabeth" by Mary M. Luke.
I devoured the book, catching up and restoring my memory of the lusty
English king whose reign has been characterized in print, in the movies and on
television. Events leading to the coronation of Elizabeth I as queen of
England gave deep insight into the reign of her father and his succession of
wives, including Anne Boleyn, mother of the future queen.
The book accurately depicts establishment of the Church of England by
Henry VIII after a dispute with the Pope over the legality of Henry's marriage
to Catherine of Aragon, widow of Henry's older brother, Arthur. Henry's
attempt to have that marriage set aside was prompted by his infatuation with
Anne Boleyn and his wish to provide a male heir.
King Henry's male heir was his son by his later queen, Jane Seymour.
Edward became king at age nine, but government was in the hands of his
protector and council. He died at age 15 before he could reign in his own
right, and was succeeded by his half-sister, Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry
VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

It was a passage in the book about the reign of Queen Mary that triggered
my interest in my family tree. The passage told of the religious persecution
in England, dating from the establishment of the Church of England and
continued under the reign of Queen Mary, who married the son of the Spanish
emperor and restored the Roman Catholic Church in England.
I suddenly remembered a book called: "English Convicts in America" and
looked up the notes I had copied years back:
"Vol. 1, Middlesex Session, including London."
"JOHN TERRY, sentenced to transportation in Dec. 1664
(to the colonies) at Middlesex Quarter Sessions.
Offense: attending a conventicle (secret religious
meeting)."
Of course, 1664 is much later than the reign of Queen Mary, and I have no
reason to believe that this John Terry may be my ancestor. However, the
television programs and the book have provided the spark to see what I can
find.

Jonathan TERRY of Short Hills
The small piece about Jonathan TERRY on p. 57 of the most recent TFH
points up a minor problem that might stump a researcher trying to find out
more about the individual. The problem relates to the identification of
"Elizabeth, now Westfield, NJ."
Elizabethtown, one of those peculiar New Jersey political entities called
a township, existed as a part of Essex County almost until the Civil War.
Shortly before, 1860, the township seceded to form Union County. So, anyone
looking for records of that area needs to consult the records in Essex
(Newark). However, Elizabethtown maintained its own courthouse in competition
with the county seat at Newark; this was one of the causes of the secession.
"The Westfields" was the open area in the western part of the township.
Only much later was a small portion marked off as the city of Westfield. Many
of today's towns and cities in Union County existed as unincorporated
villages: Short Hills, Springfield, Summit. As railroad development opened up
the western portion of Union County, villages were formed: Plainfield,
Westfield, Fanwood, Garwood, Netherwood, etc. Only later were these
settlements incorporated into political subdivisions.
Stephen TERRY's book might suggest that a researcher look at records in
the City of Elizabeth (a much smaller portion of old Elizabethtown) or the
City of Westfield, when searching in the records at Newark or the New Jersey
Historical Society (also in Newark, with a fine genealogical collection and an
astute director) might be more profitable.

RESEARCH STATUS REPORT
JESSEE TERRY OF ROANE COUNTY, TENNESSEE

This research report on the status of research into the elusive Jessee
TERRY of Roane County, Tennessee is incomplete; additional information is
solicited from other TERRY researchers. Many TERRY-searchers have already
contributed significantly to what is known, and their efforts are acknowledged
with much appreciation.
Jessee C. TERRY (the middle initial is ascribed by family tradition;
suitable documentation is still lacking) was born between 1760 and 1770 (1830
Roane Co. census). According to the Winston Garth TERRY Bible record, he was
76 years old at his death in Roane Co. on 17 April 1844, thus giving a birth
year of about 1768 (Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society Quarterly, June
1984, p. 200). Jessee TERRY's burial location has yet to be established.
Gov. William Blount (Southwest Territory) appointed a Jesse TERRY as
constable for Washington County on 15 December 1791; Washington Co. was a
precursor that included the later Knox Co. TN (The Blount Journal 1790-1796,
Nashville TN, 1955, pg. 54). Jessee TERRY appears for tax purposes in Capt.
Crawford's company in Knox Co. in 1796. Jesse TERRY was commissioned a
lieutenant in the Knox Co. militia regiment on 10 Oct 1796 (Gov. Sevier's
commission book). While he may not be the same person, the number of persons
with the given name Jesse or Jessee in East Tennessee during this period was
quite small. Other evidence, given below, suggests they may be the same
person.
Jessee TERRY married Hannah Price McNair in Knox Co., 03 Apr 1797
(Winston Garth TERRY Bible, hereinafter abbreviated WGT) with bond by
Cinnanais McCoy and witness by Charles McClung (Knox County Tennessee
Marriages). The presiding justice was George McNutt, first commissioner of
Knoxville. Other records (Marriages above, DeArmond, etc.) give the date as 31
Mar 1797 but this may be the date of the bond.
Hannah Price McNair was the daughter of James McNair and Martha Price,
who were married 07 Apr 1773 (WGT). Hannah was born 1781 (1850 Roane Co.
Census) and died Oct 1859 (1860 Roane Co. mortality census) in Roane Co. (WGT
gives the date as Oct 1858). James McNair was supposed to be the son of Daniel
McNair, Augusta Co., VA. James served with the NC militia during the
Revolution. In 1784, he lived in Sullivan Co. (later TN) where Hannah may have
been born. By 1794, the family lived in Knox Co., TN. James McNair's will
provides the names of children (Knox Co. Estate Book 2, pp. 351-352). Martha's
will, on pp. 354-355, provides a direct bequest to daughter Hannah TERRY and
"niece" (probably granddaughter) Martha TERRY (Knox Co. Court, July session
1818) (Leaves From the Family Tree, Allen, pp. 175-179).
Hannah Price TERRY's siblings are given below. This information is
important for the evidence it suggests with respect to Hannah's children.

Jessee TERRY signed the petition for creation of Roane Co. addressed to
the Tennessee General Assembly 04 Oct 1799 (Pioneers of Roane County,
Thornton). He is not listed in the Roane Co. tax lists for 1802, 1805, or
1808, but is listed along the Knoxville Road (near Kingston) for 1814-1818
(with 325 acres in 1815). He is shown on Capt. Wister's list for 1819-1820.
In 1815, he voted for representative to Congress and signed a petition in
1817 to alter district lines. In 1819, 1822, and 1823, he served as a juror in
the Roane Co. circuit court. Jesse TERRY was released by the circuit court for
paying half the value of "one stray man" whom he "took up" (Roane Co. Record
Book E, 1818-1821). Jessee TERRY was a witness to the will of John Sharp,
dated 23 Sept 1815 (Roane Co. Estate Book B, recorded 05 or 28 Apr 1820).
In 1821, he is on Capt. Christian's list. The extent of Capt. Christian's
company is given in 1830 as (Pioneers of Roane County):
"Beginning at S. W. Point running up the Tennessee River to where the
Ridge commonly called the dug Ridge runs to the River, then with said ridge to
where the stage road crosses, then a line from there to David Blackwell's, so
as to include Hezikiah Love and Jessee TERRY then a straight line to the
mouth of Emeries River so as not to include Robert Gilleland, then down Clinch
to beginning."
J. (or I.) TERRY is mentioned in the settlement of Rudolph Mooman,
deceased (Roane Co. Estate Book A, Jan session 1822, p. 161). In 1828, he is
recorded as having paid a bill for $10. Jessee TERRY is listed, with a due
bill in 1839 as a witness to a will, in 1840 (Roane Co. Estate Book C, p. 40,
121). In the will of Thomas Brown is listed a due bill on Jesse TERRY for
$8.15, dated 04 Jun 1836 (Roane Co. Estate Book E, March term 1849).

Jessee TERRY and his family are not listed in the 1840 Roane Co. census
although the entry in Estate Book C suggests he still resided in Roane Co. WGT
gives a death date of 17 Apr 1844. The Estate Books for Roane Co. do not
provide an entry for Jessee TERRY during this period. Where was he?
Several possibilities present themselves. A Hannah TERRY is listed in the
1840 Chatham Co., NC census but the entry suggests that this is not the person
we seek. A Jesse B. TERRY is present in White Co., TN but other evidence
strongly suggests no direct relationship to our subject. THF suggested (Vol.
3, No. 2, p. 19) a relocation to Augustine Co. TX. The census entry, however,
has not been found to test if this is our subject. The possibility that they
resided with neighboring relatives was examined; however, the David Moore and
Gilbert Christian families account for all their members in the 1840 census.
So the whereabouts of this family is something of a mystery.
In any event, Hannah TERRY, now a widow, appears with her three youngest
children in the 1850 Roane Co. census as family # 1773. The family is not
destitute as they have property valued at $1000.
I am proposing the following list of children of Jessee and Hannah TERRY.
1. TERRY, Martha b. ca. 1801 TN m. Hezikiah Love 09 Sep 1820,
surrogate Jessee TERRY (Roane County Marriages, 1801-1855).
Hezikiah Love is noticed as deceased on 01 Oct 1841 (Roane Co.
Estate Book C, p. 247). Two of the beneficiaries are Martha Love
and Jessee TERRY.
LOVE, Hezikiah b. 1796 was the son of a Revolutionary war veteran
of the same name who died in Roane Co. in 1833. Hezikiah and
Martha TERRY Love had children:

1B. LOVE, Robert named for Robert Love, paternal grandfather?

Wells (The History of Roane County, Tennessee, p. 241) shows Martha Love
as a widow in the 1850 Roane Co. Census, family # 815.
2. TERRY, Mary b. ca 1805 TN; m. Gilbert Christian 27 Oct 1827,
Josiah Terry as bond. This Josiah Terry is not otherwise
identified but attempts to connect him with an individual with
this name, who eventually settled in Scott Co., TN were
terminated after publication of George A. Terry's fine article in
the TFH.
Gilbert Christian is mentioned several times in Gov. Blount's journal.
One was appointed lieutenant colonel commanding the militia regiment of
Sullivan Co., 25 Oct 1790 (p. 32) while another, possibly his son, was
appointed justice of the peace on the same date (p. 31). Robert Christian,
possibly another son, was appointed captain of militia in Sullivan Co. on that
date. Gilbert Christian had been an office in Sullivan Co., NC before the
formation of the Southwest Territory, that became Tennessee. Based upon the
1830 and 1840 census, Mary's husband Gilbert was b. ca 1800. Robert was b. ca.
1770.

Josiah is indicated as age 50 in the 1850 census with a birth year ca.
1800. Sarah F. is age 41 (b. 1808).
There are a number of Terry's living in Jackson Co., TN in 1850 with some
similarity of given names. However, consultation with Jay Terry suggests no
direct tie exists between Roane Co. and Jackson Co. families.
Where was Jessee Terry born and who were his parents? His children,
Jesse, Myra, and Sarah gave his birth state as VA in the 1880 census. Earnest
Terry has suggested that the naming patterns of his children may give a clue
as to the names of his parents. Hence, a great deal of space has been devoted
to examining the naming patterns of the children and grandchildren to
determine if this family followed some clearly identifiable pattern.
