EDITOR'S NOTE
Just a short note to thank you all of the readers for their support for the year 1985 and 1986. I have a number of projects in the mill and will be working on marriages for Northern Terry Families and would appreciate any references in this area. I have about 300 marriages now.
First of all I apologize for the lateness of the December issue. I do not have a good excuse and did not get the TFH to the publisher on schedule. I have received some good articles but not always in time for publication; however, I do try to wait as late as possible to get the information in the publication.
Due to the fact that several issues are now out of publication and they are not indexed yet, I did publish surnames from 1983-1985 to help everyone know what surnames individuals are researching. This will help I believe, because the TFH is located in several large libraries and you should receive some responses from across the U. S.
I continue to be embarrassed by the stack of unanswered mail, but will try and publish your questions in the TFH. It is getting harder for me to answer questions on an individual basis though I fully intend to do so in time.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Mike Terry, Editor

COVERING THE TERRY-TORY by Robert W. Terry 4900 Springdale Road Cincinnati, OH 45239
Cincinnati, my home for nearly 25 years, is making plans for its bicentennial year in 1988, for it was in 1788 that the first settlements were established.
Principal figures among the first settlers were guilty of errors in judgement when they founded communities in what later became the "Queen City of the West."
First, Capt. Benjamin Stites placed his settlement at the mouth of the Little Miami River, but flooding of that river and the Ohio River forced abandonment.
Second, John Cleves Symmes, sold the site of present downtown Cincinnati to a pair of New Jersey developers and a
Page (154)
Kentucky teacher/surveyor, and tried to make his downriver settlement at North Bend the metropolis of the future.
Stites was the trader who traversed the land between the Great Miami and Little Miami rivers while chasing Indians who had stolen horses from a Kentucky settlement. Returning to New Jersey, he described the land to Symmes, a member of Congress, resulting in the Symmes purchase of lands between the two rivers.
So, instead of Stites' settlement called "Columbia," or the Symmes settlement at North Bend, it was the little village of Losantiville that became today's downtown Cincinnati. Losantiville was a name coined by John Filson, the Kentucky teacher, surveyor and map-maker. The name translates roughly from Greek and Latin to mean "The City Opposite The Mouth," since the mouth of Kentucky's Licking River was, and still is, directly opposite present Cincinnati.
Losantiville grew rapidly with the construction of Fort Washington, built by the U.S. government and staffed with soldiers. Protection against Indian attack appealed to those early settlers, who remained there until the military could make the frontier safe for land acquisition.
It was on Jan. 2, 1790 that Gen. Arthur St. Clair, governor of Northwest Territory, met with the Losantiville developers Robert Patterson, Matthias Denman, and Israel Ludlow, the latter a surveyor who replaced Filson, who had been killed by Indians.
St. Clair was a member of the Society of Cincinnatus, an organization of Revolutionary War military officers, and he proposed the name change form Losantiville to Cincinnati. The Losantiville proprietors had no objections.
Losantiville residents quickly adjusted to the new name of Cincinnati and to Hamilton County, given by St. Clair to the county in honor of Alexander Hamilton. By October, 1790, the first general court of the Northwest Territory was convened in Cincinnati.
According to Ford's "History of Cincinnati" all the jurors were from Cincinnati proper, with none of the outlying communities represented.
I have read somewhere that the first jury DID NOT INCLUDE any person from the legal profession. Could there have been forerunners of ambulance chasers in that early day?
That list of jurors included by g/g/g/ grandfather, John Terry, and a notation says he served Oct. 6, 7 and 8 but was absent on Oct. 9. I wonder whether he found Indian summer
Page (155)
weather a good time to go fishing, or whether he had other pre-winter duties to perform.
For those of you chasing other surnames in early Cincinnati, I will list the names of those other early jurors. Many of their names occur in Symmes' purchase records, early wills and early marriages.
In addition to my ancestor, they were:
Jacob Reeder, James Wallace, James Cunningham, Francis Kennedy, John Cummings, John Vance, Seth Cutter, Joseph Cutter, Richard Benham, James Burnes, Luther Kitchell, Henry Taylor, Nathan Dunnals (probably Daniels), David Logan, and Abijah Ward.
It was more than a year later, on Nov. 4, 1791, that Gen. Arthur St. Clair led a force of soldiers and militia against the Indians near present Fort Recovery, Ohio and suffered a disastrous defeat. Some of the above jurors of 1790, and/or their sons, took part in the battle.
Allan W. Eckert, in his book "The Frontiersmen," says that of the 920 men, soldiers and militia, under St. Clair, there were only 24 men uninjured. There were 632 killed, 264 wounded.
It wasn't until Aug. 20, 1795 that Gen. Anthony Wayne avenged St. Clair's defeat with a convincing victory over the Indians at Fallen Timbers, in northern Ohio.
That's when the early settlers left Losantiville/ Cincinnati in search of land and newcomers arrived from the East to make Cincinnati one of America's most important cities in days to come.

Notes on the TERRY--PRIDDY Connection by Beverly R. Conolly 19000 Muncaster Rd. Derwood, MD 20855
I was reading the TERRY line of Lelia TERRY Morrow in the March issue of the TFH, and think that just MAYBE she is on a wrong line. I am enclosing a copy of a letter that I sent to her....As in every other family line, with the constant repetition of the same names, it is often confusing, and many times a person will get a "John" mixed with his cousins, uncles, etc.. Especially when there are so many, by the same names, living in the same area, and at the same time!! Anyway, I couldn't really follow her line, so it may be a misunderstanding on my part, however, if she is descended from James Gideon TERRY, born in 1799 and married Celia Priddy, then he is the son of John and Sarah Gooch TERRY, and not William....
[Text of letter]
....My TERRY line is through Thomas J. Priddy, who married Margaret "Peggy" TERRY, daughter of John TERRY and Sarah Gooch TERRY. Thomas J. Priddy was the son of Richard Priddy and Judith Forrest Priddy.
Richard and Judith Forrest PRIDDY had the following children:
1. PRIDDY, Elizabeth b. Halifax Co., VA 1783 m. 30 Dec 1804 Jacob Miller.
2. PRIDDY, Mary "Polly" b. Halifax Co., VA 1784 m. 22 Aug 1805 John Moore .
3. PRIDDY, Burwell b. Halifax Co., VA 1786 m. 13 Dec 1811 Susanna Moore ; m. (2) 24 Nov 1824 Winnafred Priddy.
4. PRIDDY, William b. Halifax Co., VA 1790 m. Sarah TERRY.
5. PRIDDY, Thomas J. b. Jefferson Co. TN 23 May 1795 m. Margaret TERRY.

8. PRIDDY, Celia Ann b. 7 Dec 1806 m. 18 Dec 1824 Gideon TERRY . [Son of John TERRY and Sarah Gooch.]
9. PRIDDY, John F. b. Jefferson Co. TN 1807 m. 1828 Mary Walden. 10. PRIDDY, Malinda b. Jefferson Co. TN 1809 m. Thomas TERRY.
11. PRIDDY, James O. b. Jefferson Co. TN 11 Jan 1810 m. Elizabeth ______.
12. PRIDDY, George? [Possible as he picked up Richard's last pension check.]
John TERRY and Sarah Gooch TERRY had the following children:
1. TERRY, James Gideon [called Gideon] b. 26 Nov 1799 m. Celia Ann Priddy.
2. TERRY, Nancy b. 21 Aug 1801 m. ??
3. TERRY, Margaret "Peggy" b. NC 6 Aug 1803 m. Thomas J. Priddy. 4. TERRY, Edith b. 26 Sep 1805.
5. TERRY, Mary "Polly" b. 12 Oct 1807.

11. TERRY, Elizabeth b. 24 Sep 1821.
12. TERRY, Sarah Ann b. 31 May 1824.
Thomas J. Priddy, son of Richard and Judith Forrest Priddy, b. Cocke Co. TN 23 May 1796, according to War 1812 Pension Application. d. Kaufman Co. TX 28 Dec 1876, buried in Fox Cemetery near Egypt, TX m. (1) Margaret "Peggy" TERRY, daughter of John and Sarah Gooch TERRY, b. NC 6 Aug 1803. m.
Page (158)
(2) Mrs. Elizabeth Powers Brown, widow. All of the children of Thomas J. Priddy were by Margaret TERRY. Margaret died 8 Jan 1862 in Itawamba Co. MS.
The above Priddy and TERRY family information came from the Priddy and TERRY family bibles, as well as the War of 1812 application papers of Thomas J. Priddy, who married Margaret TERRY, daughter of John and Sarah, which is my particular line.
In the March 1983 issue of the TERRY FAMILY HISTORIAN, Irma Nell Barnes published the same TERRY information from another bible belonging to Thomas Wells Woods and Judah TERRY Woods. It gives identical information as I have from the Bible of Thomas J. Priddy. There are many other descendants and other Bibles that give this same information as well as the different county records.
My particular line is through Thomas J. Priddy, b. 23 May, 1795, Jefferson Co. Tennessee, d. 26 Dec. 1876 Kaufman Co. Texas m. Margaret "Peggy" TERRY, [sister of Gideon] daughter of John and Sarah Gooch TERRY. They had eleven children, among whom was Celia Ann Priddy, b. 27 Mar 1824 Alabama died 10 Sep 1884 in Johnson Co. Texas m. Andrew Jackson Reeves, son of Issac and Mary McAdams Reeves 6 Mar 1845 in Itawamba Co. Mississippi. Both Celia Ann and A. J. Reeves are buried in Cleburne, Texas. Celia Ann Priddy was named for her aunt, who had married Gideon TERRY.
Thomas J. and Margaret TERRY Priddy had eleven children as follows:
1. PRIDDY, Maria b. AL 1822
5. PRIDDY, Richard b. AL 1831 d. 1869 m. Sarah Shamles; Sarah went to Texas.
6. PRIDDY, Thomas J. Jr. b. AL 29 Jul 1833 m. Clarrissa Tankersly. Moved to Texas i 1853 before the others in 1869.
Page (159)
7. PRIDDY, Judy "Judith" b. AL 1835 m. John Senter.
8. PRIDDY, Jane b. Itawamba Co. MS 1838
9. PRIDDY, Elizabeth b. MS 1840 m. Thomas Dulaney.
10. PRIDDY, Margaret Lucitia b. MS 1843 d. 1863.
11. PRIDDY, Malinda b. MS 1846 m. Robert Senter [Named for Aunt.]
My line is through Andrew Jackson Reeves and Celia Ann Priddy Reeves.
It is interesting to note how many of the Priddy family married into the Moore and TERRY families, and how many of Thomas J. Priddy's children married into the Reeves family. Elizabeth Priddy married a Dulaney, whose parents were Gilbert Dulaney and Rebecca Ewing Dulaney. William M. Reeves, son of A. J. and Celia Ann, married Mary Frances Ewing, niece of Rebecca.
I have the Priddy information complete, should you need it, and would be happy to send it to you. Judith Priddy, wife of Richard, lived with Thomas and Malinda TERRY, after the death of Richard Priddy. Thomas TERRY helped her with her widow's pension -- Richard served in the Revolutionary War. They lived in Marion Co. Alabama, and later moved to Oktibbeha Co. Mississippi. I also have the church records for them. Judith lived into her nineties and died in 1857.
The Bible of James "Gideon" TERRY was owned by Mrs. Lena Ross Carter, of Meridian, Mississippi in 1942. Mrs. Paul Draughn of Hattiesburg, Mississippi also was a descendant of James Gideon. Mrs. Shirley Castleman, of Weatherford, OK is a descendant of Thomas and Malinda Priddy. I think that the James Gideon mentioned in your article in the Historian is the same Gideon, and if so, he was the son of John and Sarah Gooch TERRY, who were VA-NC-and TN-AL-MS Terrys. They didn't spend too much time in NC as Margaret was born there in 1803, and Thomas was born in Tennessee in 1810. They moved very early to Alabama.
Sincerely,
Beverly R. Conolly (Mrs. Richard L.)
[I think some of the confusion re: the Priddy-Terry family links stems from Leanardo Andrea's South Carolina Notes. He covered a lot of "Terry-tory" but was not always exact in his reporting e.g. the 1942 note.

THE ENFIELD STREET CEMETERY, ENFIELD CONNECTICUT
by Frederick W. Sawyer III 8 Sachem Drive, Glastonbury, CT 06033
The Enfield Street Cemetery is located on U.S. Route 5 (Enfield Street) near Spier Street in Enfield, Connecticut. It is maintained by the Enfield Cemetery Association (P. O. Box 45, Enfield CT 06082), and has been in constant use since the first half of the 17th century.
The cemetery has three entrances from Route 5, the rightmost of which has a stone archway. To the left of the central entrance and 15 rows back one will find a stone seat (dedicated to a sister of Selah mentioned below) under a tree; immediately in front of this monument is the stone for Isaac Terry (d. 1782), an Enfield shoemaker. Isaac's parents Captain Samuel Terry (d. 1731) and Martha Boreman Terry (d. 1743) are buried side by side in row 19 in the section to the right of the road. On that side of the road there is a large Terry monument with a Grecian urn on its top; if one faces this monument with back to the cemetery entrance, then Samuel and Martha's stones are in front of and to the left of the monument. Samuel was a farmer who served at various times as constable and selectman; in 1716 he was made captain of the local militia. Martha was the daughter of Samuel Boreman of Wethersfield.
Martha's stone was sunken into the ground and is loose.
In a talk at the 1985 meeting of the Society of the
Descendants of the Founders of Hartford, gravestone
conservator Lance Mayer identified Samuel's stone as the work
of Thomas Johnson, Senior, who produced gravestones between
1723 and 1736. In analyzing Johnson's work, Ernest Caulfield
("Connecticut Gravestones V," Bulletin of the Connecticut
Historical Society, January 1956, 21(1):1-21) has stated:
The outstanding feature of these stones, particularly when compared with other Connecticut gravestones of that period, is that they show the hand of a master craftsman. From the stern cynical skulls with their gnashing teeth as well as from the feathered wings, fig borders and care- ful lettering, one may conclude that this artist was exceedingly proud of his work and wished each stone to be considered as a finished product. The edges of each stone were carefully chamfered, and even
Page (161)
the backs were often made unusually smooth and occasionally decorated with a border.
Martha was Samuel's second wife. A child by his first wife (Hannah Morgan Terry, daughter of Miles Morgan of Springfield) was Dr. Ebenezer Terry (d. 1780), who is buried next to his wife Mary Helme Terry (d. 1762) in row 20 on the left side of the central road, immediately below and to the right of a large evergreen tree. Ebenezer was a physician who lived for a time in South Kingston, Rhode Island but settled in Enfield around 1722, representing the town in the legislature (of the Massachusetts colony). Mary was the daughter of Samuel Helme of South Kingston, Rhode Island.
Ebenezer and Mary's son Selah (d. 1803) married his half first cousin Michal Terry (d. 1810), a daughter of Isaac and Margaret (Downing) Terry. Selah and Michal are buried together in row 21/22 to the right of the central road, to the left of the Terry monument and behind the stones for Samuel and Martha.

NOTES ON DESCENDANTS OF
RICHARD TERRY OF SOUTHOLD, NEW YORK
Book Review: By Carol Dickinson, 4100 O'Malley Road, Anchorage AK 99516.
Terry Family [Some descendants of] Richard Terry of Southold, Suffolk Co., N.Y. Compiled by William Z. Terry, Ogden, Utah, 1951. No publisher.
This is an original typed manuscript, 122 pages in length, with two indexes, one general index and one for heads of families.
I found it in the LDS library in Salt Lake. The call number is 929.273/ T2794wz. I believe it may be the only typed copy Mr. Terry produced, however I was recently informed by a correspondent that it is now on microfilm and available through the LDS branch libraries. I do not know the microfilm number.
Mr. Terry quotes as his sources James P. Terry of Rockville, Utah, Addie Chase, Nellie Garlock, Alice Throope, Stuart T. Terry's manuscript, and additional research of his own. Regular readers of the TFH will recognize most of these sources as those frequently mentioned as experts on northern Terrys.
I have been using this material as a basis for
Page (166)
correspondence with other Terry researchers for 7 years now. In all that time I have never received any correspondence from persons receiving copies of this material who can identify any errors. Mr. Terry has been very careful in his assemblage of material from various sources to note any discrepancies between sources and to state every reason why he finds one source more believable than another.
While no overall narrative of the history of the Terry descendants is included in the book, listing 352 family groups, it still makes very interesting reading. One is able to pick up the thread of the family story.
Richard Terry the immigrant arrived on Long Island in 1635 at the age of 17 with his brothers Thomas, age 28, and Robert, age 25. on the ship James. The book does not record data on Richard's brothers, but it is of note since much research is currently being done on descendants of Thomas.
Richard and his wife Abigail had 10 children. The descendants of 5 of them are recorded.
Descendants settled in Mattituck on Long Island, East Palmyra, New York, the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania.
At the time of the Revolutionary War, one descendant, Parshall Terry first served with George Washington and later changed sides. Eventually, he fled with loyalists to Ontario. There are many Canadian descendants recorded in the book. Parshall also left a good many American descendants, (a total of 151 Gr. Gr. grandchildren). His American branch were explorers. They were early settlers in Michigan (one was the founder of Pontiac) and many followed the Mormon migration patterns. The most recent family groups in the book are mostly in Illinois, Missouri, and Utah (after 1850). There are also several families that went to Pennsylvania throughout the time period but they are only recorded for one or at the most two generations.
Persons tying into this line have about a 60% chance of tying into the Horton or Parshall lines. Both of these families have been researched and published, the Hortons to the immigrant ancestor and the Parshalls to Alfred the Great.
I have a complete photocopy of this book which I made in 1978 since it was not copyrighted. I have checked every advertisement in the TFH since Vol. I, No. 1 which appeared to even remotely have a chance of connecting on this line and written to each advertiser. I have also sent hundreds, maybe thousands of copies of these pages to these correspondents sharing what I could and in return finding many helpful friends. The pages of my copy are so faded from exposure to lights of photocopying machines they no longer can be copied.

Any reader who wishes to find out whether it would be worth requesting the microfilm by having me check the indexes of my copy, may send me a self addressed and stamped 5 x 7 post card and I will be pleased to check. I would like to keep the query letters in a file for cross referencing. I have been able to introduce by mail several of my past research correspondents to distant cousins. My address is: Carol Dickinson, 4100 O'Malley Road, Anchorage AK 99516.

161285 TERRY SHOEMAKER COLEMAN MITCHELL
I just returned from MO where I finally visited the TERRY cemetery I sent you info on. Quite an experience! About 3/4 mi. hike through pastures, under a barbed wire fence into the woods around the old cemetery. It had all grown up again since all their work clearing several years back. We encountered poison ivy and a well used wolf den. Also a tree had fallen across a section of nice new fence flattening it. Dad was discouraged. I had also met a distant cousin who had a large pack of old Terry/Shoemaker letters. She had an 1847 letter to my ggg grandfather James Sparkfarley TERRY. James' sister had died and the sister's husband Robert S. Coleman, had written to tell James. There was a packet of love letters between Peter Garland TERRY and Lydia Shoemaker in 1855. Peter was a son of the above James. There were also notes for an obit -- pencil on tablet paper, placing the above James in Smith Co., TN 1825. So finally, a new TERRY lead for me! I hope to go to St. Paul and check the TN Census tomorrow. For

The Editor, received a post card 09-28-1985 with St. Paul's on the front from Madelyn Payne, 5036 Crestwood Dr., Little Rock AR 72207 via England. "...The Huguenot Heritage began with a special service at St. Paul's [Cathedral]. There were "TERRY" Huguenots at Cantebury, I found out while there today -- Will try to find more. It was originally spelled THIERRY and changed it later." Another note: ...am also sending several Tafels and some articles concerning some Terry's. One women who descends from Gideon [Terry] (Celia's husband) says that he was the son of Nathaniel and Ann THOMPSON. I would like to know how she comes to that conclusion. She was probably quite old when the book was published and probably has been gone for years...

291285 TERRY THIERRY THIERY FLOOD
In the "Chicago Genealogical Society Newsletter" I read of your "TERRY Family Historian". Have had a question in my mind for quite some time. Guess you are the one to ask. My grandmother's maiden name is THIERRY pronounced 'Terry'. I'm doing quite well researching our family in New Orleans, thank goodness. Have found seven different spellings for the same family so far depending on who is doing the writing. Now the question is -- Is TERRY the anglicized name for Thiery or is TERRY a different line altogether???? So far I have Thierys from France, Germany, Belgium & Spain. I really hope yours is separate as I have scads to contend with as it is. Mrs. Ralph A. Flood, 17603 Walter St., Lansing IL 60438. [I would certainly welcome Thierry/Thiery researchers and yes, Mrs. Flood, it is probably as you suspect!]

341285 TERRY TREBLING MERRIFIELD BARKER
Your name was given to me by Mr. Lee Weisner of Murphy, NC....I am doing research for a friend, Dr. Jack TERRY, as a gift to him. This is what he knows: His father, John Trebling born ca. 1864, was adopted out of a Cincinnati Orphanage at the age of 8 yrs. He was adopted by Jefferson TERRY (b. OH 23 Dec 1843) and Ellen E. TERRY b. 03 Nov 1845. They died in Newton, KS. They took Jack Trebling with them, and reared him as a son and he did not marry until he was about 36 or 38 yrs. old. Do you have any info about where these Terrys came from in Ohio? They might have just gone to the Orphanage and picked up a boy,and this might not help me at all, but I am really struggling for any clue. John Trebling had a sister that was adopted by a River Boat Captain. And it is the Trebling family that I am trying to find. John's father either died in the Civil War, or from wounds after the war. And then the mother died, and that is the reason the children were put into the orphanage. Wanza Barker Merrifield, 808 Sugar Maple, Ponca City OK 74604.
